Book Reviews of The Last Twilight (Dirk & Steele, Book 7)Book Review: Action, mystery, romance with a paranormal twist. More please! Summary: 5 Stars
There is so much to like about Last Twilight the latest entry into Marjorie Liu's Dirk & Steele series, great characters that really connect, plenty of action with a bit of suspense, a touch of romance and a fabulous setting to pull it all together.
Leopard-shifter Amiri is assigned by Dirk&Steele as a bodyguard to protect virologist Dr Rikki Kinn as other virology experts begin to go missing in Africa, but there is much going on behind the scenes, plots and experiments that will draw Rikki and Amiri deeper into a web of secrets and danger. While the action is non-stop, the relationship between the leads is well developed and fits naturally into the flow of the story as very quickly they are running from unknown enemies and fighting death. From the moment they meet there is something beyond the immediate peril that draws Rikki and Amiri together. It is quickly apparent that Rikki and Amiri are kindred spirits, despite the fact that Amiri has such an otherness about him that you can truly believe that he was raised away from humans and that the leopard is never far below the surface when he wears his human skin. They both have survived torture in their recent pasts, and both carry scars that have caused them to avoid personal connections -- their trust is rarely given. We know a part of what Amiri suffered from his first appearance in Shadow Touch (Dirk & Steele, Book 2), though we soon discover that what Amiri has suffered at the hands of those he loved left scars almost as deep. The damage to Rikki is just as extensive, and as we discover the extent of degradation she suffered, I just had to admire someone who had the strength to survive when the visible evidence of her torment is a daily reminder of what she suffered. One thing that I really liked about the interactions between Rikki and Amiri was that they both had such an innate sense of how to treat each other. Amiri especially gives Rikki the respect of a survivor and not the pity for a victim. Soon as they both start to overcome the distrust that they have used to keep their hearts safe, each starts to question whether mere survival is enough anymore. They begin to realize that not actually living their lives and only surviving is just another victory for their tormentors. Fortunately they find in each other something soul-deep that will not be denied, and which allows Rikki and Amiri to finally move beyond the pain and to fill the empty places in their hearts and to become whole again.
While the relationship and interactions between Amiri and Rikki are my favorite part of the book, I also love the way that author Liu does such a good job of conveying the details to her exotic settings and making them an integral part of the story, here we are immersed in the African jungle the vivid details, and especially the cat's eye view from Amira taking us there so that it is entirely possible to imagine the shadows, feel the humidity and hear sounds of the jungle. And it is also fun to see old faces Max and Eddie return from past books and the mysterious Riktor, inhuman and intriguing as aways, makes me want to go back and reread Shadow Touch. Hopefully he'll get a book of his own soon, but there are so many other interesting possiblities, Liu's next book is already on my list. If you haven't already discovered the world of Dirk&Steele you owe to yourself to go back and hunt them up if you enjoy contemporary action packed romance with magically enslaved ancient warriors, shapeshifters, psychics, healers, witches, wizards and more in exotic settings.
The series:
Tiger Eye (Dirk & Steele, Book 1)
Shadow Touch (Dirk & Steele, Book 2)
The Red Heart of Jade (Dirk & Steele, Book 3)-- Okay but not my favorite
Dark Dreamers -- a connect short but doesn't really impact the series at all
Eye of Heaven (Dirk & Steele, Book 5)
Soul Song (Dirk & Steele, Book 6)
Oh, and I just discovered
My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon has a prequel, I am off to read it now!
