Book Reviews of The Lion & the Mouse

Book Review: Deserves Every Honor
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a beautifully illustrated picture book that encourages the observer to use the pictures to tell their own story of "The Lion and the Mouse". This is an old story, but Mr. Pinkney has succeeded in making it fresh and vital again for a new generation of readers. After my third grade students completed the telling of the story, I introduced Mr. Pinkney's "companion book" titled,
"Aesop's Fables" - another excellent book. Specifically, I started with "The Lion and the Mouse" in this book and had my students compare and contrast their story with how Aesop told it. The kids loved the whole process. Get both books for a great experience - they're wonderful.

Book Review: Can't get more wonderful - Caldecott winner
Summary: 5 Stars

Our library is unique to the USA. We are run by a non profit based on public radio/tv. Anyone can use our library and we hope they will give money (memberships.)When this book crossed my desk for a bib record and item records I had to look at it. This is the 2010 Caldecott winner. If you don't know what Caldecott is then I will tell you it is a huge prize for art/illustrations in children's books, This book has the most incredible watercolor paintings. Buy it for your child, for you, for your child's school library or your library. This book's art is amazing. We don't have art in the schools anymore - give this book to your community. Inspire someone TODAY.

Book Review: Best part about spending time with a child
Summary: 5 Stars

As a teacher I am always looking for books that I can read with my 4 yr old niece. This book does the trick....catch is there are no words. As an adult you actually need to sit down with the child and look at the book together, and decifer the story. The illustrations are amazing and it is fun to look for all the hidden animals within the drawings. This is such a great story and it really gives you the opportunity to come to your own conclusions about the story and what the overall meaning can be. If you dont like to sit sown with your child and share in the reading, then this book is not for you. But for my niece and I, it was time well spent together.

Book Review: Compassion for all creatures
Summary: 5 Stars

Jerry Pinkney's new book is a visual treat, using stunning illustrations to retell Aesop's fable. Using only the occasional sound, Mr. Pinkney's storybook lends itself to an interpretation that supports and reinforces animal rights. The gist is this: the lion spares the mouse and the mouse frees the lion from a hunter's net.

As the New York Times Book Review aptly points out, Mr. Pinkney seems right at home drawing animals who are animals, "not humans in disguise." Now if only we could be as kind to the mice and lions as this book depicts them being to each other!

Book Review: Gorgeous
Summary: 5 Stars

The book is absolutely gorgeous. As other reviewers have said, it is nothing short of amazing that the illustrator could take a story made up of no more than two pages of text, a story that practially everyone knows, and transform it into such a rich, delightful and new.

I've not given this book to my child yet (it is a Christmas present), but we are huge fans of wordless picture books and the storytelling opportunities they provide, so I am sure it will be a hit. He does not know the Aesop tale, so I am looking forward to seeing how he interprets the story.
