Book Reviews of The Longest Trip Home: A Memoir

Book Review: A real disappointment!
Summary: 1 Stars

I cannot believe I wasted my time on this book. I finally stopped when I realized it was not going to get any better, although I did skim the last 50 pages, which thankfully I did not read. I now have a very disappointing opinion of John Grogan-a filthy mouthed, disrespectful, sacrireligous kid, who devoted his childhood to lying and causing trouble. His parents seemed so nice-how could they have raised such a worthless kid? If my sons turned out like him, I would consider myself a complete failure as a parent. Grogan you deserved to be played by a drug addicted, suicidal maniac in the movie Marley and Me.

Book Review: Even Better Than Marley & Me
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is about John Grogan growing up. The childhood stories he tells are so funny! He had experiences for sure. If you grew up Catholic like I did, you will really identify with that part of the book: being an altar boy, going to confession, the sacraments, it's all in here. His brothers and sister interaction is very good and the "stars" of the book are his parents. The end deals with them getting older and is so good. I loved this book! I got into it real fast and it was hard to put down. I read it in three days.

Book Review: Beautifully Written, Really Hits Home
Summary: 5 Stars

Like reading chapters from my own playbook in a way... many similarities, including the loss of a parent just before Christmas. I loved this book. John's writing skill and style is so easy and vivid, you feel like you're walking with him on his journey and having a talk. This is a candid memoir-- he doesn't hide the flaws. It's real. And that's what makes it so special. Did I laugh? You betcha. And I cried harder reading the last chapters of this book than I have in years. So well done.

Book Review: The Longest Trip Home
Summary: 5 Stars

Good read. The first parts really rang a bell with me. We were the only protestant family in a Catholic neighborhood in the late 50's-late 60's near
Detroit. Some of the neighbors were his family to the T. Many of the memories he has of growing up mirrored some of my own children's who are a little younger than he. I thoroughly enjoyed this sometimes funny, sometimes sad memoir of the Grogan family. He's a good writer. Hope he writes some more.

Book Review: Best Book I've Ever Read
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is the best book I've ever read. I laughed so hard my kids came running to see if I had 'lost it' then I cried so hard at the end I actually couldn't hold the book. John writes as if you are right there with him experiencing the same things he is....most of which I have growing up in suburban Detroit myself. Read this one first and then read Marly & Me and while I have to say I loved the story of Marley too, this one is my personal favorite.
