Book Reviews of The Lovely Bones: Deluxe EditionBook Review: hauntingly beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
My Husband Ran Off with the Nanny and God Do I Miss Her I read this book a few years ago and it it will never leave me. It is one of those books you can't put down - I read it in one night and so did my daughter. It is a daunting task to write a story from the viewpoint of a !$ year old girl who has been murdered and therefore is telling the tale ss someone who is dead, but the author does this so beautifully, that it is almost hard to digest. In one way, it is like getting a glimpse into what heaven really would be like. The reader is also reeling in the horrendous way this little girl was murdered> You can feel the effect her death has on her family so realistically it hurts deep inside. And while the reader is caught up in the fascination that I believe all humans feel about death, the story really is a compelling, page-turner detective story, Is really amazing and beautifully written. I had a very good friend who was murdered at age 14, so perhaps I am not the best judge. Somehow it gave me comfort. maybe there is a heaven after all. Sincerely, Tracy Davis I am an author of a much lighter, humorous but still a bit sad novel that is based on my true story and is available exclusively on Amazon.com called "My Husband Ran Off With the Nanny and God Do I Miss Her." I have to add humor to my writing in order to tolerate it. I could never write a novel like My Lovely Bones. Yet the novel is not depressing - it is fascinating and I think it s one of the best books I have ever read, in its own unique way!
Book Review: Bookalicio.us review of The Lovely Bones Summary: 4 Stars
To be quite honest I had never heard of this book until I saw the trailer linked from Twitter in reference to the moving coming out next month. After watching the trailer I said to myself "wow that had to have been a book first", a little tiny search on Yahoo brought up a plethora of results and I am happy to say that Sebold's book is the second I purchased on my Sony Pocket Reader. I tore through this book in a day, staying up into the night to finish it. It brought me out of my funk of not reading after having the baby and put me back on track. I am so happy to have read the book before watching the movie.
The story follows fourteen year old Susie Salmon from her after life as she deals with her rape and brutal murder. She resents being killed and wishes her murder to be brought to justice. She also wishes to relive her first kiss and have many more, she wishes of course to have grown up. We watch her family crumble under the pressure of having a child murdered, her school friends grow up without her. How everything evolves except for Susie who is stuck just watching waiting for her murder to be captured.
This is a lovely story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and will also make sure you lose some sleep due to the fact you cannot put the book down. Don't watch the film without buying a copy first!
Book Review: Less Than Lovely Summary: 2 Stars
Sometimes, it's very easy to understand why a book gains notariety and stays on the bestseller lists ad nauseum, such as the case with The Kite Runner. However, after reading The Lovely Bones, I wrinkled my nose and shook my head - I honestly couldn't see what the fuss was about.
The story is told by the ghost of Susie Salmon, who has been recently murdered by Ye Olde Neighborhood Pedophile. The reader is then taken on Susie's sappy, sloppy journey of peeking in on her family and friends, watch how they cope (or don't) with her death, and ultimately, witnessing the downfall of her killer, from Heaven, which is so ill-defined as to be irritating in its vagueness.
Granted, though the very premise of the story should have tipped me off that this was going to necessarily be a saccharine tear-jerker, I was plodding through this forgettable bit of "chick lit" (what a shame that young women writers and readers think so little of themselves to label lukewarm fare such as this appealing writing to their demographic)and probably would have finished it and immediately cleared it from my mind, but for the unforgiveably ridiculous ending.
I won't give it completely away, but think of a hybrid between a "Sweet Valley Twins" novel and the ending of the movie "Ghost" and you're pretty much on point.
Book Review: just didn't do it for me Summary: 1 Stars
A friend recommended this book to me. I had heard about it briefly that it was becoming very popular, but at the time I didn't know it was going to be a movie. Some of the characters in this book really got under my skin. Susie's mother for instance. It was hard to focus on other aspects of the book when i couldn't get over what a selfish woman Susie's mother was. I though the end was just ridiculous. There was no justice for the other 5 or so woman that he killed. I thought it was ridiculous that Susie says she feels bad for Mr. Harvey when she realizes that he tries not to kill. He raped her and cut her into pieces! The fact that she comes back to earth and all she does is have sex with a guy she kissed once when she was 14 just doesn't make sense. Ruth, a girl who had only spoken to Susie like one day, becomes completely obsessed for years. This book is completely unbelievable except for Mr. Harvey, and that is the most chilling part. People like that really exist in this world. That is the message I got coming away from this book. The only lingering thing that I will remember. It is rare for me that this type of book comes along, but i truly think this will be better as a movie. As a book i just don't think it reads well.
Book Review: The Lovely Bones* mild spoilers Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book but it is not an easy read nor is it a book for anyone. I read this book as a hand me down when it first came out and honestly did not know what I was getting myself in to. The first chapter brought me to tears and left me so shocked I put the book down and called my step mother to ask her what the heck she was thinking when she gave me this book to read? a few nights later, I picked it back up again... and did not stop reading the entire night. Alice Sebold is an amazing writer and woman may I add , since she is inspired by things that have personally happened to her. This book is beautiful in its own right and it is not a story based on Suzy Salmon's murder or finding her killer, like the movie portrays it. It's about everything else that comes between a family when they have tragically lost one of their own, it's about what a young woman, on the cusp of adulthood, feels when she's been cheated out of life and can't move on by watching her family from her personal heaven. But I think the most important message that is relayed through out the whole book is about forgiveness. I definately recommend this read to my friends... but with a warning to trudge through the rought part.
