Book Reviews of The Lovely Bones: Deluxe EditionBook Review: Must read. Must see. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a book I've been following for about.... two years now. Peter Jackson is coming out with his cinematic vision of "The Lovely Bones". The date had been pushed back to 2007, then 2008 and as you might have guessed now 2009. By the time the movie comes out I will be as clueless as everyone else in the audience because I will have forgotten the ending. But for those of you who have not had the pleasure, I definitely recommend the read. It goes by so fast! The plot (A young girl who was brutally raped and murdered, watches the effects of her death on her family from Heaven, as her parents drift apart, her father becomes obsessed with vengeance and her sister grows into the woman she would never be) may sound a bit macabre but intriguing none-the-less. I'm also very interested in how Peter Jackson will cinematize this novel. An actress from my current favorite movie "Atonement" will be playing the lead- Suzie. Thank god Hollywood did not break down and default Dakota Fanning in this role as I feared they might. I really liked Saorise Ronan's performance in Atonement and think she would make a *perfect* Suzie.

Book Review: Not so Bad..Not so Good,...a Ghost. Summary: 3 Stars
So Suzie Salmon is this 14-year-old girl, brutally raped and murdered. Gone to Heaven, and watched how her family struggled and coped, all this years because of her death. I came to, first, hate, then love this book. I hated it because the author is so deep in details. Tiny details. And to love it, because it make me think about death, in way, that it's not bad, and that sooner or later, will happen to all of us. I love the fact of how she was fascinated of all living thing; the fact that took her ten years to accept that she has dead, ten years for her to leave, to move on; and to let her family to move on from her death. Ten years took a family to recover. The book,at first for me, was hard to read; even a little boring, but I came to love it, because it gave another different perspective of death. I won't praise this book, I have read better books...but I won't say it's not a good book. Give it a try. If you don't like it, you can return it. But give yourself the opportunity to read something different. I loved this line from the book "When was it all right to let go not only of the dead but of the living-to learn to accept?"
Book Review: The Lovely Book Summary: 4 Stars
Now I see what everyone's been talking about, what a great book! I can't believe I didn't read it sooner, but at least I got to it before the movie comes out.
I was surprised at how classy the writing was, something I would think would be quite difficult when writing about life in heaven, and even the grief of the family. There were so many opportunities to veer towards cheesy, and while the author occasionally gave a nod in that direction, for the most part she managed to keep the over-sentimentality in check.
For anyone who has ever lost someone dear to them, I would think they would find this book comforting. Knowing there's someone up there watching their family is a nice thought, even if (***POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT***) the body snatcher ending was somewhat less than appealing for me. That being said, I think that was just about the only conclusion the author could make in order to tie up a somewhat happy ending. Still, I much preferred the first 2/3 of the book to the somewhat contrived finale, even if those sections were a bit more morbid.
Book Review: The Lovely Bones Summary: 4 Stars
Who would have thought that in suburban Pennsylvania poor Susie Salmon could be hurt so bad? Susie was only fourteen when she was raped and killed. This excerpt is from page 13, and is what was said before she died.
"Mr. Harvey," I said, "please let me leave"
"You aren't leaving, Susie. You're mine now"
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is a fiction novel that tells about what happens to a regular family when a sister and a daughter go missing. The end is told in the beginning, but the rising and falling actions are still surprising. It is written from Susie's point of view. This is different because she dies in the first chapter. The book describes in detail life after Susie's death though it was a quick read. Lindsey, Buckley, her mother, and her father (her family) are all affected in different ways by the life changing experience and are all described. I recommend this book to almost everyone! While the beginning was sorrowful, the end is beautiful. There is a little something for everyone in The Lovely Bones.
