Book Review: HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT
Summary: 2 Stars

** SPOILERS**

I usually write reviews about books I have enjoyed reading, but I was so dissappointed with this book that I felt compelled to write a review. First of all, those that liked the book have to keep in mind that not everyone is going to buy into the hype and be completely taken by it. It was the movie trailer that sparked my interest in the book. The book started out promising but half way through it was nothing but drivel. I didn't like how she jumped from one character to the next. Susie's mother seemed like a bored housewilfe that decided to change her life by leaving her family for a few years. I can deal with the fact that they never found Susie's body, but having her killer die in such a pathetic way and not bringing him to justice was the most upsetting thing for me. I found it lame and trite and don't reccomend it.

Book Review: I Found Strength in the Pages of The Lovely Bones
Summary: 5 Stars

On April 16, 2005, my world changed when my father was tragically killed. I was a thousand miles away and still cannot describe the pain. A good friend of mine gave me a copy of The Lovely Bones and I know that reading it when I did, brought me from the brink of a deep depression and retreat from life!

Although I did not get it right away since the story itself did not seem relevant to my own situation, after reading it a second time, I realized the message was simple: we can survive anything and God truly has a plan in everything, and never gives us more than we can bear. Basically, it was a reminder that there is indeed a better place and knowing that made losing my father more bearable.

The Lovely Bones: Deluxe Edition

Book Review: Not My Cup of Tea
Summary: 3 Stars

This book is by far my least favorite. While I'll agree that the author has talent, hence the three stars, I never felt drawn in, and while the story for obvious reasons is not a "happy" one, I missed the emotional connection that I often crave when reading a book of this magnitude. My heart just wasn't in it, no tears were spilled unfortunately. Plot spoiler: The fact that the murderer died mercifully left me with unresolved issues. Additionally, my vision of Heaven is so peacefully euphoric that I was deeply disappointed by its design in this book. The idea that anyone would have to watch their family mourn them and then subsequently fall apart seems more like Hell in my eyes. This is not a book I'd recommend, however, it's obvious by all the amazing reviews and Hollywood's desire to put its hands on it that I'm a rarity.

Book Review: good but not great
Summary: 4 Stars

I liked this a lot, especially at the beginning. There were some very powerful emotions and fascinating perspectives throughout the book - in places. But on the whole it tended to wander along. The popularity of this book is not justified by the hype.

It's not exactly a murder mystery or suspense novel (and I'm sure that Sebold wrote with that in mind), but I found myself wanting more *action*. The little interaction between Suzie (as a ghost) and her family seems mostly incidental to the story itself. The one time she 'falls to earth' is nice, but could be edited out of the story without hurting it at all. Even the moment of 'revenge' near the end was almost a footnote it was such a brief aside.

I predict this may be one of those few times I prefer the movie to the book.

Book Review: Great premise, great beginning, then it just dies
Summary: 2 Stars

After seeing the movie review, I was more than excited to read this book that I was positive would become a new favorite. Wrong. The beginning was great, it caught my attention, and I wanted to see what happened. The climax though occurred in the *middle* of the book. With nowhere to go from there, the author just drug out the story, filling it with pointless trivia about the victim's family and friends. I kept going though, wanting to know how it ended. Then I got to the end and had to ask myself - what was this author thinking!

If you're looking for a murder mystery as told by the victim, this unfortunately is not your book. If you're looking to read about the mundane lives of a family and their friends that you don't particularly care about, happy reading!
