Book Reviews of The Lovely Bones: Deluxe EditionBook Review: If you can get past the first chapter, you'll love it Summary: 4 Stars
When I told anyone who asked what this book was about, they invariably replied "that sounds awful". Being a story of a family's grief after their daughter is murdered, you'd think so. But the author does a wonderful job of making it real and readable at the same time - it's not like reading of an awful murder story on [...]. I'll admit the beginning is a little difficult to read, not impossible but...unpleasant I guess. And I think the idea of watching your family grieve for you from heaven would be torture. Having said that, it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to my friends.
Book Review: A friend recommended this to me Summary: 3 Stars
I just finished this book. It was a good read, until the last few chapters. I was waiting for the "finish", and all questions answered, etc. But, it didn't happen. The story just kind of went flat. There was an extra chapter to update you on the characters today --- but it really didn't satisfy the reader's questions about what happened, and whether all issues were resolved. I'm sure the movie will tie it up into a nice little package, as movies tend to do --- but the book did not.
Book Review: A diffrent view Summary: 4 Stars
It was an attention grabber on the first page when the reader is advised that the main character is telling the story from her Heaven. That situation makes the story interesting as she learns about relationships that she wasn't able to understand while she was alive. It was an interesting read because of that perspective, but was maybe overwritten a bit. As each relationship is defined and settled it unnecessarily bleeds into the next character's story causing a little confusion.
Book Review: Provocative Summary: 4 Stars
I didn't really know what to expect, but after getting over the rape/ murder of Suzie, I settled into what was a very provocative story of love and renewal. It is more about the way the family deals with the tragedy than the actual tragedy itself and that is what gives the story its purpose. The family, for good and bad, deals with the death in their own way, and inturn, Suzie, comes to realize her family will move past the tragedy-- and so will she.
Book Review: I laughed, I cried, I loved it. Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't read a book as satisfying as The Lovely Bones in years. I read it on my Kindle and loved it from the first page. It was brutal and lovely and all the things a great book needs to be. Sebold, herself a survivor of sexual assault, poured much of her aching anger and disbelief into Susie Salmon ("like the fish") who, being dead, can dispassionately observe and narrate the story she has departed. It is worth every one of the 5 stars I gave it.
