Book Reviews of The Man Who Ate EverythingBook Review: I can't get enough! Summary: 5 Stars
Though I've followed Jeffrey Steingarten's column in Vogue magazine ever since I first came across it, I hadn't realized that he'd published two books, both compilations of his essays in Vogue. I must say, I'm addicted. Having read both The Man Who Ate Everything, and It Must Have Been Something I ate, I am reduced to "googling" to find more Steingarten gems. Alas, the closest thing was his Q&A on egullet.com
Perhaps the fact that I'm a food junkie (despite bordering on veganism) colors this review, I still appreciate the witty writing and almost exhaustive research and thought that went into each essay. Not only is he a wonderful writer, researcher, his passion of food is infectious.
I highly recommend any Steingarten book.
Book Review: Perfect for those in-between times Summary: 5 Stars
This is the perfect book to have when at a traffic jam, doctor's office or any of the hundreds of daily jams we find ourselves caught. I found myself laughing out loud several times at many of these admittedly wacky but witty tales. The subject matter was in itself a winner - he touches on everything from non-fat fat to fruit ripening to when to buy certain products. And this is the best feature of the book - it is not only entertaining but also informative...the best of both worlds. He does not have the poignancy of a M.F.K. Fisher or the razor claws of the reviewer Simon Britchky or the down-to-earth charm of a Nika Hazelton but in his own way, he is just as good.
Book Review: An entertaining and informative collection Summary: 4 Stars
Maybe he didn't really eat "everything;" but Steingarten seems to have come close. Once one gets past Steingarten's gourmand snobbery, this is a highly enjoyable and informative book of chapters, which read more like essays, on different food-related topics. Steingarten mightily challenges fad diets and nutritional myths (like all fat, salt, or alcohol is bad for one's health) with well-researched statistics and information presented in a very humorous fashion. He becomes personally involved with each subject almost to a fault. There are even a few recipes thrown in for good measure. Buy this book and feel good again about eating!
Book Review: A true food lover's delight Summary: 5 Stars
People that don't like this book, apparently don't like food. This book is one of the most interesting, delightful, humorous book on food on the market. I have read it several times, always finding it more and more amusing. His essay about food phobias enticed me to rid myself of one of mine. I never liked olives - although I actually wanted to like them - my wife eats them with delight - there are so many great recipes that call for olives - so I embarked on the task to "like them" I ate them every day for several weeks until I actually conditioned myself to like them... I love this book. Jeffrey - write another one !!!
Book Review: Stop being so damn fussy! Summary: 4 Stars
For all the fussy eaters out there - read this book! Your allergies are a lie, your dislikes are irrational. Jeffrey Steingarten shows how anyone can get used to anything, and that most people who claim "allergies" to a particular food aren't allergic at all, but need a socially acceptable excuse to not eat it.Stop it now. Read the book and stop making your life into a hell of "Oh no, I can't eat that, I'm allergic, I'm so sorry, but you know, I realise you put a lot of effort into making that, I wish I could eat it etc. etc."
