Book Reviews of The Master Cleanser: With Special Needs and ProblemsBook Review: Headaches, blood pressure and fibromyalgia Summary: 5 Stars
3rd Fast:
I recently finished my 3rd Master Cleanse fast. You don't do this cleanse to lose weight, because you'll gain all or most of it back once you end the fast. This cleanse is to 1) remove mucous from the digestive track, 2) reduce blood pressure, 3) reduce triglycerides and cholesterol, and perhaps 4) remove other toxins from the body.
I know because it had done all of these things for me. My triglyceride count went from 427 to 235 (still high, but much better). I had a cardiac episode where my blood pressure was (I'm not kidding) 253/122 in the emergency room (I'm a 46 year old female). They stabilized me at 193/98 and sent me home. But I declined medicine and immediately when on this 10 day fast. On day 10, my blood pressure had dropped from chronic stroke range to 115/70.
It also functions like an elimination diet. Anyone who has food allergies will feel better on this fast. I have fibromyalgia and felt great - lots of energy and clear headed; I stopped getting migraine headaches for the 10 days I was on the fast. Now that I'm back to eating, I feel much worse!
You have to re-enter the eating world slowly. A piece of toast with butter on it will make you sick after fasting for 10 days. Homemade vegetable soups, and nuts are a good way to re-enter on day 11 and 12.
Something as severe as Leukemia can't be cured with a fast, but for the rest of us, it can be an amazing leg up on our poor eating habits and this toxic world.
(Update) 4th Fast: Fibromyalgia/migraines/food intolerances
I've done my 4th Master Cleanse fast and getting ready to fast again this year. This fast revealed food intolerances to:
wheat (gluten),
yeast,
mushrooms,
MSG,
soy and
store-bought meats (antibiotics and preservatives)
These allergens caused my muscles to seize up almost immediately after eating them, but before the 4th fast I could not detect the reaction.
**It took 4 fasts before the sensitive level rose in my body enough to detect the toxic reactions.**
The fibromyalgia is still there, but there's less pain because fewer muscles are seizing up and pulling my spine and jaw out of place. My migraines also went away entirely after I stopped eating wheat!!
If I had not known and used the Master Cleanse fasting system, I would still be almost incapacitated with pain, because the doctors really know so little about these mystery diseases.
Final note on PENICILLIN ALLERGY --I also discovered through the fasting process and research that people with a PENICILLIN ALLERGY should NOT eat mushrooms, soy sauce, yeast (in breads, pizza), aged cheeses or other yeast fermented foods/drinks. These items cause chronic inflammation in the gut (causing Leaky Gut) and other lifelong systemic health problems.
Book Review: Absolutely Brilliant Summary: 5 Stars
My first Master Cleanse lasted 60 days. At some point, it was as if my body went into hibernation. I didn't need food (I wanted it, but only psychologically), and I felt great. In fact, due to running injuries I had sustained years before, I hadn't been able to run consistently in nearly eight years. After Day 12, I ran 12 days in-a-row, working my way up to over 10-mile runs back-to-back. For other reasons, I stopped running until Day 49, at which point, I resumed 7 and 10 mile runs all through Day 60. I have done three additional Master Cleanses since: 20 days, 23 days, and I'm currently on Day 42 of a cleanse of unknown duration.
While other people report breakthroughs after just a few days -- and certainly within the 10-day prescribed period -- I haven't really started to feel clearer and lighter until after Day 35. Thus, for two of my cleanses, I never reached that sweet-spot.
Each cleanse is essentially easy if you stick to the instructions. Do the Salt Water Flush. Drink the Senna Tea at night. Prepare the lemonade according to Burroughs' directions, and don't skimp or splurge on the Grade B Maple Syrup. While the recipe calls for a 1:1 ratio between lemon juice and maple syrup, Burroughs allows a 2:1 ratio for weight loss (or what he calls a "reducing diet"). I prefer the taste of the 2:1 ratio, as it's not as sweet, though it doesn't accelerate weight loss for me. Anything less than a 2:1 ratio makes me feel weak. Ergo, Burroughs knows. Listen to his wisdom.
I don't care what anyone says. My father is a well-known doctor and initially poo-pooed the Master Cleanse when I told him I was doing it. After he observed the results, he went on it himself and advised his patients to do the same! The Master Cleanse is easy to follow, easy on the body, has tremendous results, and makes me feel great. I absolutely love the Master Cleanse, and imagine I will continue to do it for the rest of my life.
The book is short and an easy read. I'd recommend getting it prior to starting any cleanse. Even though the recipe and chat rooms are readily available, there is nothing quite like the calming effect of its creator when one seeks guidance during the cleanse itself. I mean, if one were having surgery, would one rather be reassured by the doctor or by some internet site? There are a couple other Master Cleanse books -- one by Peter Glickman and one by Tom Woloshyn -- which I've also purchased. They do not replace Burroughs' book, but rather supplement it. Of the two, I've found Woloshyn's book more interesting, as Glickman's book is mostly a reprint of posts to his website. Still, during these prolonged cleanses, I often look to each of the books for comfort, as I know there are other people who have endured and benefitted from the curative and restorative properties of this truly masterful cleanse.
Book Review: Nothing else around like it! Summary: 5 Stars
I cleansed for the first time in May, 1999. My mentor was on this cleanse (day #18), and because of his tremendous success & side benefits he was experiencing, I gave it a try. I admit that I was "hungry" for the first 3 days, but after that, hunger was not an issue. I was 34 yrs. old at the time, a distance runner, and weight/height proportionate. The results for me were phenomenal. Never in my life would I have imagined the "stuff" that was in my gastro-intestinal tract, yet alone throughout other parts of my body. The "gunk" that had been caked to the walls of the G.I. tract was unbelievable. My mentor went 33 days on this cleanse, I just went 10 days. I now have cleansed every 3 - 4 months, and as of this day, I am on my 6th cleanse (4/16/01). Many people who do not understand "deep body & tissue cleansing" just smirk & laugh at this. You just ingore any negativity & focus on the positive benefits that it is doing for the body. Oh, I have found that the Shaklee Herb-Lax is the best mover of the waste that is going to be broken up. Also, the tongue will become white (candida/yeast/thrush). I found that brushing the teeth with Shaklee's New Concept Dentrifice is very helpful because it does not contain sugar that the yeast can thrive on (brush the tongue also!). Skin brushing is very important, not only during the cleanse, but for the duration of your life here on earth. It stimulates the lymphatic system to dump waste into the colon. Every 3 - 4 days, the Shaklee Peppermint Tablets are wonderful for the mint tea recommended in the book. Oh, while on this cleanse, soak in 3 caps of Dr. Bronner's Peppermint-Castille soap & 3 caps of Shaklee's Basic-H organic cleaner. Use only ORGANICALLY grown lemons and Grade B Maple Syrup. I have found that using cayenne capsules works great for those individuals who have a hard time with the "heat" of the cayenne. I am currently using 3 capsules a day (morning, afternoon, evening) & seeing how my results are going to be (otherwise, I have always put the cayenne right into my drink). Now, when you get off the cleanse (after breaking it CORRECTLY), I recommend Shaklee's Optiflora (acidophilus/bifidus). It is the ONLY product of its kind that guarantees LIVE delivery of the healthy bacteria to the colon (unbelievable results with this product). Also, purchase the book "Eat For Your Type" (diet according to your blood type). Dr. Bernard Jensen's book "Foods that Heal" is also another outstanding book. You can undo what you did on the cleanse by going back to old, unhealthy, non-cell nourishing eating habits. Be open to change & let your body tell you what it needs & what makes it sick & diseased! Book Review: THIN BOOK full of GREAT info Summary: 5 Stars
I read ALL the reviews before I purchased this book. I was extremely disappointed when the book arrived. It was so thin, I tossed it aside and didn't even bother to read it. MONTHS later, I picked it up again and I did read it. I am so glad I took the time to peruse those fifty pages! Not only did I read it, but I tried the fast.
My husband and I went on the cleansing fast together for eight days. My Mom always said misery loves company. I am JOKING! It wasn't that difficult or bad--I missed food and chewing because I LIKE to eat. Okay, I LOVE to eat. My husband is more active than I am so it was a little harder for him to follow the fast--but we BOTH did it! We experienced the same benefits that others have mentioned already.
What I wanted to add to the 140+ reviews is that for anyone not wanting to commit to a ten day fast, there are compromise alternatives that may also be beneficial to your health and still allow you to use some of the GREAT info in this book.
In the book EATING ALIVE by John Matsen, the author recommends drinking the lemonade first thing in the morning and then waiting as long as possible before eating anything else. It is sort of like a mini fast. I was doing this for MONTHS prior to reading THE MASTER CLEANSER and prior to my eight day Master Cleanser lemonade fast. I have continued my morning lemon juice since I finished the eight day fast.
In Stormie Omartian's book GREATER HEALTH GOD'S WAY, she dedicated one chapter to fasting. Were it not for that one single chapter, I may never have even attempted any kind of a fast--ever! Her simple little chapter encouraged me and offered both hope and information that I sorely needed.
Some people jump right in. Others need to test the water and ease in. The Master Cleanser book offers a jump right in approach. It is my hope that my review will offer some encouragement to those who are more comfortable easing into something new. Either way is OKAY!
My husband and I never used the salt water flush (too harsh). We only used the laxative tea. We discovered that not all laxative teas taste okay. Our two preferences were CHOCOLATE SMOOTH MOVE (NOT the plain Smooth Move--it was yucky) and YOGI TEA GET REGULAR. We added a little of the real maple syrup to the tea. If you feel you need the tea to be a little stronger, simply use two tea bags.
A purist might disagree, but we discovered on about the fifth day of the fast that chewing some Peelu gum helped ease our craving to chew something and gave our jaw some exercise. Hunger wasn't as big an issue as wanting to chew someting and eat food because of how it tastes.
Good luck on your journey to optimum health!
Book Review: This review is going to get a lot of disagreement! Summary: 2 Stars
I read a lot of the reviews on here before I purchased the book. I so badly wanted it to work. I read about everyone from Jared Leto to Beyonce to Robin Quivers losing weight using the Master Cleanser plan. I really wanted it to work. I bought all the needed stuff -- including the special salt, the laxative tea, the lemons, everything. I really, really wanted this to work (have I said that?)
I followed the instructions to the letter. I drank the laxative tea the day before starting the program. I woke up hungry (I usually do). The diet says that you will not get hunger pangs but if you get hungry, "simply" drink another glass of lemonade. I drank one as soon as I got up and was starving a few hours later and drank another one. Still hungry. The hunger never went away. I'm not talking about slight hunger. I'm talking being ravenous. By late evening, I was dizzy and started getting a headache. I drank another glass of the special lemonade. And then another. I felt so bad by the time I got home but I drank more water and the laxative tea.
I woke up the next day with a headache that was worse than any hangover I've ever had, cramps in my calves (a sign of dehydration) and a *wonderful* case of diahhrea (sp). I was dizzy and couldn't focus my eyes. I literally felt like I was drunk. I couldn't take it anymore and had to eat. I didn't want to quit after making it through one whole day but at that point I didn't have much of a choice.
How people do this "cleanse" for weeks, I don't know. I don't remember the last time I felt so awful. I went through a bad breakup years ago and was so upset I didn't eat for a little over a month and lost 30 lbs, so I'm familiar with the concept and have had other times in my life when I've gone without eating. But it's like this this formula made me hungrier the more I used it. I was so disappointed. AGAIN, I really wanted it to work. The book is easy to read, and of course, inexpensive. This isn't a fad, but rather something that people have been using for years. Even if not for weight loss, I wanted to experience the cleansing part and couldn't do it. I have willpower of steel and a high discomfort tolerance but when I became too dizzy to even drive and I could feel my heartbeat in my head (that's how bad the headache was), that's when I have to admit that this diet/cleanse wasn't really a good idea (for me).
I know, I'll get slammed here for not saying how great the Master Cleanse is, but trust me, I would have given anything for it to work. I really wanted to do it. I've seen all the positive reviews about the diet here. Apparently I'm the ONLY one who had all the problems I experienced.
