Book Review: Is this a bandwagon or something?
Summary: 4 Stars

manoman. My life has certainly been affected since i discovered this slim yellow volume while obsessing about how to get mucoid plaque out of my body. Let's just begin by saying that mucoid plaque is disgusting. The average American diet is disgusting, and indeed, most average Americans are disgusting as well. Fastfood and convienience...we love these things and it shows. Each time I see a distended bowell on an obese person I cannot help but think to myself "man...that must be abvout 20 pounds of mucoid plaque." But enough of my personal rant. Getting to the point, this book assists in the effort to rid oneself of mucoid plaque. As far as fixing obesety goes, i dunno...weight loss is a side effect of this program, but as the text warns, certainly not the intended use. I'll sum up the experience of my 10 day commitment with this single observation: After 10 days with no solid food, mucoid plaque was still being expelled. This is a path of self-discovery, as many things in life are, and it would be thievery on my part to explain all the details of the experience. Plus, i dont want to type it all out anyway. It's gross at times, hard at times, and gratifying at times. I came out of it with satisfaction in greater personal clenliness and an increased strength of will. When it gets difficult to stay commited, as it most assuredly will at some point or another, keep this foremost in your mind: There have been autopsies performed on people who's small intestine stored 40 pounds of mucoid plaque. that is simply gross. And exercize won't burn it away. Good luck to those who dare it.

Book Review: It's a cleanse, not a diet - and it works
Summary: 5 Stars

Of all the cleansing methods I've looked at, this one seemed the easiest to do. And it turned out to be very effective. You will notice the changes right away.

There are some things that should be noted:
1. If you read and follow the instructions accurately, you will NOT feel hungry, but you WILL have cravings for foods that have sugars, caffeine, etc. There is a difference and some of the negative reviews were from people who cannot distinguish between the two.

2. There IS some measure of discomfort. I could literally feel the toxins leaching through and out of my body. So, do whatever you can to help the expelling though herbal laxatives and the salt cleanse.

3. This is NOT MEANT TO BE A DIET. It has a side benefit of losing weight as the author notes, but as the author also notes it's origins and applications are NOT about losing weight. This is also misunderstood by those giving negative reviews.

4. Read carefully and buy the correct maple syrup. One reviewer suggested that you would consume between 600 and 1200 calories in syrup. That is totally inaccurate - that person was probably consuming syrup with added sugar (a warning also given by the Burroughs). 100% organic grade b maple syrup has 50 calories per 2 tbl serving, which is the ratio for this cleanse. At 6-8 servings per day, that is 300-400 calories.

As with anything, your mileage will vary, but my experience seemed to generally line-up with the book and it's nearly 30-year old concept.

Book Review: A new beginning
Summary: 5 Stars

I've cleansed three times this year. After the second one, I had my annual physical. Not only did it reveal spectacular results in terms of cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure, but I dropped two dress sizes and my skin has visibly improved. My doctor was actually shocked at the difference between a few years ago and now.

People preach that this is not primarily a weight-loss diet, and they're right; if you don't commit to maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly after you finish cleansing, you defeat the purpose, and any weight lost may return quickly (your metabolism tends to slow with reduced caloric intake). However, if you let this cleanse serve as a health-building, confidence-boosting jump-start to a completely new lifestyle, you can have the best of both worlds. The great way I feel, as well as the desire to keep off the 31 pounds I lost, have inspired me to adopt a vegan/organic lifestyle and exercise daily. High-quality food is more expensive (I've learned firsthand), but your body is the temple of God, and you are a worthwhile investment.

The amazing thing is that you CAN do it. I never thought I could fast for 10 days, but it really wasn't that hard. You may "miss" food, but you're not truly hungry. My only cautions: 1) you'll need a few hours of extra sleep each night and 2) you should follow the instructions for breaking the fast very carefully, or you may experience cramps and indigestion.

I hope your experience with cleansing proves as positive as mine was.

Book Review: Why is it taboo to criticize this book?
Summary: 1 Stars

I've run into a number of people spurred by the promise of quick weight loss or the belief that they're infested with "toxins" to try this radical "diet." What's astonishing to me is how disinclined people have been so far to question how this motley array of kitchen detritus -- water, lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper -- came to assemble itself, or how this perplexing combination of ingredients is specifically supposed to flush out these supposed "toxins."

Reading the book, my first reaction was to wonder how such a text has gotten as far as it has. It only makes sense when I consider my anecdotal experience that it's really the recipe that has travelled far and wide, while the rambling explanation behind it has, to its benefit, remained rather obscure. The author of this terse manifesto of folk medicine wastes no time in proclaiming that his peculiar lemonade (it may have more aptly been Kool-Aid) will cure any disease. He further proclaims, without evidence, that all germs are "our friends," that fungi help us rid our bodies of "toxins," and that asking for the blessing of a meal will raise its "vibrations." Other claims are very easily checked, and should smell fishy even to the casual observer: that lemons and maple syrup provide all the nutrition you need is but one example.

Practitioners of this "diet" flutter with amazement at the results, vindicated that their weight loss that has confirmed the validity of the science behind it: as if there is somehow a correct way to starve yourself.

Book Review: Works for me but not for everyone
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been doing the lemonaide fast for a couple of years, about twice a year. The longest was 21 days. If you want to lose weight, I have found that I lose about a pound a day BUT I expect to gain back about 5 pounds right away. Interestingly, I only go down to about 10 pounds below my "weight chart" weight, then don't lose any more. I think those charts are a little on the heavy side, don't you?

For me, my energy lowers for about the first 3 or 4 days, then I feel good. I'm on the fast right now and am working on a fairly strenuous remodelling project.

This fast is not for everyone. Most of the people who have asked me for the recipe and tried it didn't like it. I think it has to do with whether or not you really get hungry....my MOUTH is always hungry but I never feel hungry in my stomach. If you understand that distinction, then maybe you're like me and it will work for you. I have no will power so for me it's much easier just to quit eating altogether than to worry about what, when and how much to eat. I just don't eat and when I think I want to, I check out my feeling and notice that it's my mouth and not my stomach calling for food. If I feel a little weak, I drink some lemonaide. For me, this is much easier than watching what I eat, which then leaves me thinking about eating all the time.

The book claims cures for everthing from ulcers to diabetes. Perhaps. For me, I know I feel a lot better during and after, especially the way my pants fit!
