Book Review: Compilation Rather Than Cohesive Book - But Good of Its Type

Bad-boy chef-turned-writer Anthony Bourdain collects a series of pieces he's written for other publications, divided into sections - Salty, Sweet, Sour, Bitter, and Umami (a Japanese term meaning roughly "meaty" or "savory"), plus `A Taste of Fiction'. The last is easily the weakest section, containing only a toss-off Christmas story starring a thinly-disguised Rocco DiSpirito getting his groove back by working the line at his restaurant on Christmas Eve. However, when Bourdain's snarling about chain restaurants, the "raw food movement", why Emeril LaGasse or Rachel Ray or Jamie Oliver keep turning out crap, the jihad against foie gras, attacks on chefs he both likes and respects like Gordon Ramsey or Mario Battali, or hack filmmaker-turned-hack restaurant reviewer Michael Winner, he's at the top of his game.

At the back of the book are some "second thoughts" about the originally published pieces - both clarifications of some pieces he wrote for specific audiences (like from when he lived in the UK), and amusing backpedals from his hilariously hyperbolic attacks on Food World figures like LaGasse, Ray and Oliver he's since made peace with.

I didn't give it five stars because it's a compilation rather than a complete book, so there's a fair amount of repetition in some of the targets. But if you enjoy his NO RESERVATIONS show on Travel Channel, or even just like reading a series of well-written and amusingly cutting articles on food, it's absolutely worth buying and reading.
