Book Reviews of The NecronomiconBook Review: had & explored #5 mean a dangerous book Summary: 5 Stars
some people will argue that this bood is a Fab from HP lovcraft. But where as HP only mentions it. He DOES NOT stateor write that he invented it or made it up he used the book in his material. This is a book of the old (which i beleive in my own research was the old book of the jews. Mand old gods has the same names or relations that the old book(before the tora) of the jews had. It's kinda intresting how marduke fought the ancient ones withthe help of the elder gods & now is ruller of the cosmos(->gee some one we know). Very intresting. This book is a book of Evil.. Not evil, PURE evil. U will have to research & do Exactly as the book decribes to achieve what u desire out of it. This is not a book to dable in. This book had forces that the symbols contain with in them. this book IS missing a few pages of knowledge but most of it is there. (BTW i used to go to magical childe 19w bet. 5 & 6 ave. The present owner at the time stated that Simon who created the store, Cannot be found dead or alive). the owner now don't really care about simon who preformed rituals in the basment of the store, & are quite upset at him. Any way this book you should not read out loud but only to yourself. You physically, will be fine. but your soul will not.
Book Review: FORGET THE BOOK - THE REAL HOOTS ARE THE NAIVE REVIEWS.... Summary: 5 Stars
LOVED both Crowley and Lovecraft since childhood... how nice to read a creative grimoire that has some of the "spirit' of both! Does it work? Of course, if you make it so. "Alice in Wonderland" is a great grimoire if you approach it properly (ask any quantum physicist). Is this or any of the other "Necronomicons" a work of fiction? Who cares? Remember, Crowley often used fiction and poetry as prime source material and Wicca was reconstructed by an anthropologist or two in the 1950s (despite all the bogus "family tradition" people who suddenly appeared in the '60s). Even so, these arts really DO work - it's not the veracity of the reputed source that makes your Magick work, it's your MIND and your SPIRIT!........ On the lighter side, check out the many reviews below and the reviewers' constant trumpeting of their esoteric credentials... "I'm Frater Hoo-Ha and I've read my Lovecraft"...."I'm a Certified Crone, and these others don't know what they're talking about," etc., (methinks they do protest too much.) Remember, gentle Sabrina-and-Buffy-watchers, everybody else has already read the same mass-produced books (on magic or by Lovecraft) that YOU have read! Oh, well...
Book Review: FARCEVILLE Summary: 1 Stars
This book recently caught the corner of my eye at my local book store. Out of curiosity I read the intro and immediately decided that I'd had enough, seeing that it was an obvious and also disrespectful hoax. There is a fine line between following another writers work out of admiration and out of selfless disregard, and this case is definitely the latter.
I have long been an avid fan of H. P. Lovecraft's work and I find it extremely irritating that someone would take advantage of his material like this, insulting his talents, not to mention the intelligence of the people he's trying to sucker. Granted, this isn't the first time a spin off of Lovecraft has been done, and to be sure some are better than others. But these previous writers at least had the decency to admit that they were writing fiction, and Lovecraft himself certainly never pretended that the Necronomicon was real.
I guess it's not surprising that someone went ahead and did this, and it might not annoy me as much if this 'Simon' character didn't try contending that it was a real book. But to take a perfectly good concept from a perfectly good writer and turn it into a piece of new age bull*%#, that's where I draw the line.
Book Review: About half good Summary: 3 Stars
I realize Simon was trying to make a tribute to HPL, but marketing this bit of work as "the real thing", citing how many people died and/or disappeared in mysterious ways because they were a part of it is just plain stupid. Of course, with an avid student of "the arts" you get crackpots like LaVey and Crowley, who may have a spark of something or other, but end up so full of themselves they go off the deep end and start believing the crap they are peddling. We all know there is no "magic" in this world, no matter how you spell it, but the idea that there is something more exciting out there is fun.
That being said, this book should have been setup for what it is: a tribute to HPL's works and bit of fiction.
The story parts were great and very entertaining in a Lovecraftian manner, but the whole spellbook took up too much space that could have been used for more story. I mean, what about all the stuff that was "supposed" to be in that book (you know, all the referenced in HPL works)?
Being a Lovecraft fan, I was expecting a bit more than your run of the mill spellbook, written by a sorceror hopeful that wants more out of life than having to work and pay taxes.
Don't we all?
Book Review: Truth or not, you shouldn't be disappointed. Summary: 3 Stars
The whole concept of summoning spirits of the dead while standing in a circle not being able to step out of the circle or you face being devoured by the spirit is a little too far fetched for my imagination. And granted the Testimony Of The Mad Arab was an entertaining story, I can't help but think that whatever kernel of truth there was to it must of been at least somewhat fabricated. I'm not one to say if this book is true or not since I haven't really had time to actually try any of the magic what with my job and watching reruns of M*A*S*H and all. To be honest, I only bought this book hoping it will help me get out of jury duty. I'm not demanding a refund from the store or anything so it's not as ridiculous as some of the other reviewers have said. I thought it was interesting how it describes it's "history" of the ancient gods, what each watcher's function is and all those other stories it had with it. I wouldn't recomend it if you're desperately searching for spiritual guidance. But if you want to read something of a "dark" nature, curious about what Necromancers do, or just want something that will scare the lawyers into dismissing you from sitting on the jury bench this should get you your eight dollars worth.
