Book Reviews of The New Seed Starter's Handbook

Book Review: Good book for beginners
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this book to be very informative and have already used some of the techniques I have read about in this book to start some tomato seedlings. I found out how to mix my own seed starting mix and while I didn't have the exact ingredients I modified the mix to fit what I did have. The book gave an overview of some of the common ingredients in a mix and what their purpose was. It also gives advice on seed saving and how to prevent crossing of different species.

I highly recommend this book as it gives very practical advice and suggests using things that are readily available around the house.

Book Review: Better titled the 1930's Seed Starters book
Summary: 2 Stars

Not a good book. The advice in this book seems to be written for the gardeners of a 100 years ago. And it's way too verbose. If properly edited the book would be about 1/4 of its current size, it would be direct and to the point instead of constantly rambling, and would incorporate useful information about contemporary products and techniques. As it is I find this book next to useless. My general gardening books provide better, more current information on seed starting than this book does. Plus it's printed on poor quality paper.

Book Review: information-packed!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book not only has invaluable information on seed-starting, but also info on fluorescent lighting that I didn't know before, such as the various types of lights and which are best for starting seeds; and also information and tips on how to keep your seedlings going strong, like planting them in modified raised beds that don't require lumber or other hardware (except a shovel). Way more info than can be put into a review and way more info than I needed but I marked and dog-eared the pages that were relevant to my needs.

Book Review: The Definitive Source on How to Start Your Plants from Seed
Summary: 5 Stars

I moved to a new house 3 years ago and planned to give up vegetable gardening. As a result, I gave away my copy of this book to my local library. Three years later I have purchased it again as I'm back in the gardening game and starting my plants from seed. I haven't found any other book that provides the information that this book does. Seed Starter Handbook covers all types of seed (veg, herb, flowers, etc.) and provides light, temperature and timing information in an easy to understand format.

Book Review: The New Seed-Starter's Handbook
Summary: 5 Stars

What a wonderful book! A wealth of information covering not only seed-starting, but all you need to know to be successful: some basic botany (how seeds germinate, the parts of a plant, and how they grow)proper seed-starting mediums, lighting, fertilizing, transplanting, moving your seedlings outdoors, pests...you name it! I do a great deal of seed-starting each year and wondered how much new information I could glean from this book..it didn't disappoint one bit. Highly recommended!
