Book Reviews of The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer

Book Review: my running bible
Summary: 5 Stars

After running a 5 mile race, I came home, in love with running and decided to run a marathon. After reading the review for this book, I ordered it and anxiously awaited its arrival. As soon as I started reading it, it became my bible. I followed its plan, from the training schedule of 4 days a week to the mental training of self-talk to making a video in my head to achieving flow. I began to carry the book back and forth to work every day and I realized that it had become my touch stone during the training leading up to the marathon. I felt as if each of the 3 authors was speaking directly to me, knowing what I was feeling as specific weeks, such as the first long run or hitting the half way point in the process.
I successfully completed the marathon, although not without incident. My knee (runner's knee) gave out at mile 18 and I was forced to hobble to mile 23, where I looked up to find my running angel, my friend Lisa (see chapter 15). Despite the pain, she encouraged me and I ran the remaining 3.2 miles. Thinking of it now brings tears to my eyes.
Buy this book and make the committment. Today.

Book Review: A first-time marathoner must-have
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this book to train for my first Marathon this year. I purchased a few other books to read while I trained, but this was, without a doubt, the training guide that got me through the race. Each chapter provides interviews or journal excerpts from a handful of runners of varying experiences. Though I trained alone, being able to read about the struggles and fears of the runners from the book let me know that my own fears were perfectly normal. The most important lesson I took from the book was that my body is capable of far more than my mind thinks it is. Overcoming my mental limitations was both liberating and empowering.

The training schedule presented is this book is perfect for the first timer. Its focus it to get you to finish the race -- not to have you set personal records. The training is time-consuming but not overwhelming and stresses the importance of taking time off the let your body rest. I got through my first marathon with flying colors and cannot wait to start training for my next one.

I would recommend this book to anyone--even if not training for a marathon.

Book Review: motivating and easy to follow
Summary: 4 Stars

I've done a little running on and off for a while but never could seem to increase my level of fitness. I bought this book to challenge myself and to enjoy the running trails I have by my new house. This book is worth every penny! I am only a few weeks into the training, and I have increased my fitness level and increased my enjoyment of the experience. This book is based on a "marathon class" the professors taught that is a combination of sports psychology and fitness. It is great for beginners, and if you follow along and do exactly what the authors suggest I have no doubt you can finish a marathon. The stories from many of the students make it a well rounded experience, and I can relate to the doubts, thoughts and issues they experienced and its helpful to read how they dealt with them. I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars because this book has some typos and a few sections seem a bit repetative; However, I admire the student who wrote it as she also participated in the class and being a bit overweight like me I can relate to her experiences and appreciate that she did complete all 26.2 miles as well!

Book Review: THE book for first marathoners
Summary: 5 Stars

Prior to getting this book I had done triathlons, 5 & 10Ks and one half-marathon. But still I hated and dreaded running. I wanted to do a marathon both to make 10Ks no longer scary and to make myself stick to a running program. I am slow, and a coach once said I'm not going to get faster until I'm running 20-30 miles a week regularly. I had never gotten over 15 miles in a week with all the cross-training for Triathlons. Another reviewer recommended this book as great for runners who dislike running, and that sold me. Thank you! This book should be listed first in the search results, because without question it's the best. It's 1/3rd mental training, 1/3rd physical training and 1/3rd comparative experiences of other folks who have followed this plan. It worked great! I stuck with the program with only one running partner (who is faster than I am) through two injuries that made me miss runs, through a vacation to Hawaii and through the holidays to come out a 5:03:48 finisher of my first marathon - the San Diego Marathon in Carlsbad, CA on 1/19/2003. Thank you David, Forrest and Tanjala!

Book Review: I'm a Marathoner
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first review I've ever written on Amazon. This book made such a difference in my life, I had to comment on it. Six months ago I decided I needed to do something to get in better shape. I was in decent shape, I played raquet ball a few times a week, but I couldn't run more than a mile and really didn't have any interest in doing so. I came across the book title on Amazon and decided to check it out. I read the book while on vacation and decided I was going to run a marathon. I did the pre-training for a week and then began the program. Then the most important part, I started telling friends and family I was going to run a marathon.

I finished my first marathon yesterday( 10/28/01) in Mystic, Connecticut, in four hours and 51 minutes. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I learned that the marathon was the reward and the training was the goal. During my training I read a number of marathon books, they all had helpful advice, but none were as important as this book. It was a guide, a reference and logbook. Its no longer just a book, its a memoir of the journey to my first marathon!
