Book Reviews of The Official SAT Study Guide: For the New SAT

Book Review: No explanations!??
Summary: 2 Stars

This book comes in handy because it has great tips and sources coming right from the creator of the SAT's and also tells you what to expect on test day. The only problem is that it gives no explanations for the answers. There are explanations on the sample questions only, but there are none on the practice tests(there are eight practice tests). It is so frustrating, especially in the math section, don't just tell me the answer is "B", explain to me WHY it is "B" and HOW to solve the problem. If you want an effective and easy to understand study guide, I recommend "11 Practice tests for the SAT's and PSAT's" by the princeton review. That one actually explains the answers for every single question(both math and English) in the book. You can buy the college board's if you want great tips but don't rely on it for your practice tests because its not going to help.

Book Review: SAT prep MUST HAVE
Summary: 5 Stars

I have bought countless SAT prep books already over the past few years and with this new SAT that college admissions will be looking at for the first time for high school graduates of 2006, I have built much confidence for this test. I do recommend Kaplan, but there are a few errors in their books. With this book, you are guaranteed "real" questions that will show up on the test. Of course, they will be in a different format, but after taking the June 4, 2005 test, I can safely say that this book predicted the actual one very well. One warning on the essays though. I've heard that they actually grade slightly harder than the samples they give online. Otherwise, great test prep book. (Some of the questions have been recycled from past SAT college board books, such as the 10 Real SATs book, but this is still definitely worth getting!)

Book Review: Being Official doesn't make it a good guide
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is written by the College Board the makers of the SAT so you would think it would be a great resource for all sections of the test. Unfortunately, it is not a great resource for the SAT I essay. First, they promote several misconceptions about their own test (ie all examples are weighted equally which Adam Robinson has shown to be false). Second, the high-scoring essays included as examples have very little in common with each other. Because of this it is difficult to glean a formula for writing a high-scoring essay (and there is a formula as discovered by Dr. Les Perelman of MIT). So I cannot highly recommend this book for SAT essay preparation. I give this book a mediocre rating because at least it has writing prompts from the test-maker which no other book can claim.

Book Review: Great prep for the new SAT
Summary: 5 Stars

I never really thought about it before studying for the SAT, but if ur going to study for a test, shouldn't you use real test material? I found the tests in the book a little uneven...some of my scores on practice tests were a lot higher then on other practice tests, but when I took the test in March, I felt totally prepared. And I got my scores back this week and went up almost 300 points from my PSAT.

I didn't really read the stuff at the beginning of the book, only the practice tests. I used Maximum SAT alongside this book, and that really helped me figure out what I was doing wrong and how to get answers more quickly. Mostly, I put a lot of time into practicing and reviewing the tests once I took them, and it really paid off. This is the book to have.

Book Review: Great buy for practice, not strategies - No Solutions
Summary: 5 Stars

My 5 star rating is not an overral review, but a review for the quality of their practice tests. If you are looking for practice tests, this is the book for you because it inclused tests written by ETS, and after taking the March 12 exam I can tell you that the practice tests and actual tests are very similar. While this book is awesome for practice tests, it is not the book to buy for strategies. Which the book includes some strategies, CollegeBoard is not going to release a book that tells you tricks to solve the problems they test you on. Also, the solutions to problems ARE NOT in the book, and you mast pay for them through their online course. I did this, but I don't think you should have to pay for them.
