Book Review: Ambivalent

I bought the entire Jury series at once because I had finished reading all of the other English detective series I was familiar with (Elizabeth George, Jill McGowan, Deborah Crombie, Peter Robinson, etc). I keep plodding through, feeling ambivalent about this series. I really like Grimes and the Hotel Paradise books, but the Richard Jury series I find disappointing.
I like the main cast of characters, but they do not evolve over the years. Everyone seems to remain the same, year in and year out. In other series, as in life, people actually change over the course of a decade (I'm about halfway through the series.) Jury and the other characters don't seem to change at all: move, get involved in romantic relationships, explore personal issues, etc.
The other disappointment is that while other readers applaud Grimes' innovations, I find her books to be somewhat formulaic (assuming that's a real word!) Almost every book seems to have a beautiful mysterious woman (either killer, victim or suspect), a spunky child (usually a girl) and a menagerie of animals (in later books the animals become rescuers--usually of the spunky girl who is targeted by the killer).
However, despite my disappointment, I still find myself drawn to this series as I await the next adventure with Jury and Plant.
Summary of The Old Silent (Richard Jury Mystery)
Feeling burned out, Jury takes an unplanned stopover in Yorkshire and books a room at a cozy inn called the Old Silent. Violence finds him anyway when he becomes the only witness to a murder. Though Nell Healey shot her husband in cold blood, Jury will go to any lengths to help her, including taking sick leave from Scotland Yard to investigate. Calling on his old friend Melrose Plant for help, he must break through Nell?s reticence to untangle a web of twisted motives?and twisted lives....
