Book Reviews of The Original Adventures #1 (Hank the Cowdog)Book Review: Great for Recluctant Readers!!! 4th grade Summary: 5 Stars
If you are looking for a series for your reluctant reader that does not have rudeness in it like The Wayside books or The day my Butt Went Sycho look no further.
If your child isn't into all the fantasy series that are available today and would rather read more true to life books, this series would be more interesting to them.
these books are a perfect read for a child reading on a 4th grade reading level, with not too little reading and not too much. (If they needd a smaller book to read, I would suggest THe Bailey School Kids series.)
If they can read this book series easily and want a little more challenge, but still stay away from fantasy types books I would suggest Jean Craighead George, " My side of the MOuntain" Trilogy
The books are written with Hank the Cowdog as the narrator and he is a charming, funny, and very busy character in these stories helping out on the ranch and keeping everyone safe. These books have a charm about them that makes you really understand Hank's life on the ranch along with all the other ranch animals and invaders.
"Yes, it was all clear. I had no leads, no clues, no idea who had killed the hen. What I did have was a face-full of porcupine quills, as well as several in my paws."
" The more I thought about chicken dinner, the more my mouth watered. Couldn't get it off my mind. I like chicken about as well as any food you can name. Has a nice clean taste except for the feathers. Feathers are pretty tasteless, if you ask me, and they kind of scrape when they go down."
This dog takes his job very seriously.
"Well, as I've said before, every dog in this world isn't cut out for security work. It requires a keen mind, a thick skin, and a peculiar devotion to duty."
This is also a great read-a-load for a younger child.
Book Review: Wonderful books and CDs for the whole family Summary: 5 Stars
Hank the Cowdog is a series of wonderfully funny books for kids of all ages. Ours loved them when they were little: they loved having them read to them by my wife and me, they loved hearing John Erickson read them (every book is available, and read unabridged by John Erickson on cassette and CD), and they loved reading them once they got old enough to read them themselves. The Hank books were the very first longer books they started reading. The stories are just funny, nothing serious or educational (other than the crucial step of getting them reading themselves). They loved the books so much that they had the stories nearly memorized, easing their way to reading on their own.
John Erickson is our favorite reader ever, and we own at least half the series on cassette or CD. He does a fantastic job of changing his voice for each of the characters in the books, and is recognizable with each throughout the series. He is always funny and interesting, and writes very engaging songs. Our children are now grown up and moved away, but my wife and I still love to listen to the CDs while driving; a great way to spend some time on long trips in the car.
Book Review: Hank the Cowdog vs Harry Potter... hmmmmmmmm. Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, first, I want to tell you that Hank is the best book out there. Harry Potter is #2, The Chronicles of Narnia #3. The reasons why:
Hank, Ranks:
Humor: 10/10
Storyline, Characters: 10/10
Age required: ANY age, trust me
Odds you'll read it again: 10,000,00%
Romance: 6/10, not BAD romance, the kind kids shouldn't see, hear, or read
Harry Potter, Ranks:
Humor: 5/10
Storyline, Characters: 9/10
Age required: Follow the books, ex: book 1= 10 to 11, book 2= 12
Odds you'll read it again: 10/10
Romance: More through the books, but not REALLY BAD
Narnia, Ranks:
Humor: 4/10
Storyline, Characters: 8/10
Age Required: 9 to 10 I believe
Odds you'll read it again: 8/10
Romance: None... at least I don't think so
All in all, after you add em' up, Hank the Cowdog wins!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I STRONGLY reccomend ALL of these books, but mostly Hank.
Sincerely, RedHawk48
Book Review: Would be better without the background music and racial overtones Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this CD to listen during a long car trip with my 4 & 6 year old. It started out fine, and the author has a wonderful voice...until the background music began. At first it did not bother us, but at other times, the music was to the point where it distracted us from the story. Would have been better with NO background. We persisted with the CD - Hank is indeed a fun character for old and young alike - and then the coyotes were introduced. I do not think my kids picked up on on it, but it brought back recollections of denigrating portrayals of Native Americans. The word choice and intonation came across as condescending. It made me so uncomfortable to listen to that I can not recommend this to any of my friends. I will give it to the local library because perhaps others have a different point of view. After all, 50 other reviews on this site gave it 5 stars.
Book Review: Hank the Cowdog Summary: 5 Stars
When I first got this book, before I read it, I was a bit apprehensive; A book written from a dog's perspective? Give me a break!. After I started it though I couldn't stop laughing, Hank is a bone-headed dog with an over-inflated ego, but the story isn't a bit tacky. Hank blunders around his ranch, barking at the mailman (you never know what those guys are up to), "investigating" murders (burp), and getting yelled at by Sally May. You'll love not only this book but the whole series. Let me warn you, you will become addicted to Hank the Cowdog; and the audio-tapes are even better. When is the last time you listen to a book on tape? Well, forget that, those were READ, Hank on tape is PERFORMED by the author.
