Book Reviews of The Overlook (Harry Bosch)Book Review: No padding - a nice surprise Summary: 4 Stars
This is my first Harry Bosch book and it won't be my last. What a pleasure to read a novel that isn't 50% padding! When I was a kid, most thrillers/mysteries were about this length and they focused on plot and twists and turns. This is very similiar to the kind of novel that turned me onto reading as a child. While I have enjoyed many, many longer books I have found that over the past 10 years, authors seem to think that the bigger the book, the more important it will be perceived. They shouldn't be afraid to tell a trim story with a beginning, middle and very neatly tied up end. The only chapter I didn't get was the Viet Nam interlude. Wasn't that puzzling, out of nowhere?
I recommend this book for readers looking for a well-constructed, minimilist thriller with a really nice turn of plot in the 3rd act.
Book Review: Weak Connelly is still pretty darned good. Summary: 4 Stars
I think Blood Work remains Connely's weakest novel, but this is unarguably the weakest Harry Bosch novel. Do you blame it on the fact it started out as a magazine serial? Perhaps. Connelly begins the story promising enough kind of going all Jack Bauer on us, but switches gears. Bosch doesn't really care if terrorists are going to destroy LA. He's a detective. He wants to solve a homicide. I get it, I guess. Don't believe it though. But Connelly has a great knack for keeping his readers involved, and I was never bored. Don't want to give away too many spoilers or plot points. Let's just say the ending was telegraphed from a mile away, and I was left unsatisfied. Still I'm giving it four stars because I would recommend it for a quick read to almost everyone. I can't say that for books I give 3 stars to.
Book Review: Fast pace thriller Summary: 5 Stars
I have read many Michael Connelly books. I have never been disappointed by any of them. The Overlook holds true to my previous statement. Sure, this book may not be as elaborate as some of his other novels, but it was very well paced, had action, and kept me guessing up to nearly the very end. Harry Bosche was more appealing in this novel than in the previous ones I read. It seemed like he was more compassionate and more understanding especially towards his newly assigned rookie partner. But Bosche was still tough as nails when needed to be, and saw everything a step or two before everyone else did. This book had me turning the pages wanting to find out what would happen next. I recommend it, especially to those who aren't familiar with Michael Connelly's works or the Harry Bosche series.
Book Review: A minor entry in the series, but still worthwhile Summary: 4 Stars
This is a shorter and faster read than one generally expects from Michael Connelly, but it still delivers. An execution style murder soon develops into a harrowing case of stolen radioactive substances. Bosch as usual knocks heads with the LAPD brass, the FBI, and his new partner.Rachel Walling is back in Bosch's life to complicate matters. One conflict with an overly zealous FBI agent and a later conflict with a wrong-headed police captain seem a bit over-the-top even for Bosch, but they are still fun reading. A more realistic conflict is between the older and experienced Bosch and his capable but youthful partner who still has much to learn if only he will realize it. This has the wit, the action, and the suspense but not quite the depth of the previous books. Still one to read and enjoy.
Book Review: Good, But Could Have Been More Summary: 4 Stars
The plotline was very good, but the shortness of the book left me wanting more of the old Harry Bosch. I missed the melancholy time in front of the stereo at home pondering the case, his life, the problems with his wife/girlfriend, etc. This book was a quick slam, bam, thank you reader. I miss the interaction with his partner - he has a new one this time, but nothing there is developed; it's an after thought.
The FBI and LAPD were again at each other and the mystery was worth the read, but I can't help but think that something is up with Connelly. I felt like a good story could have been even better. I just missed the the complexities of the previous stories - before "Echo Canyon". And with the plotline that he had going, this could have been a superb book.
