Book Reviews of The Overlook (Harry Bosch)

Book Review: Very good Bosch
Summary: 5 Stars

The thing about the Harry Bosch series is that there isn't a book in it that is bad. The characters are some of the best conceived, real, and evil that are out there. It has to be considered one of the best of the LA crime fiction series ever. It is up there with Marlowe. As a fan, it would be nice to see about fifty more books about Harry Bosch. There is room for it too. The series started in the late middle of Harry's career, it mentions Vietnam, his earlier LAPD ventures, the youth halls. That would all make some very interesting novels. What we are witnessing with the lastest three novels is the autumn of Harry's life. While necessary to keep the series fresh, it is so sad. This is one that you just don't want to see die.

Book Review: Short with a Punch
Summary: 5 Stars

I liked this Harry Bosch novel very much and, unlike some reviewers, had no problem with the 12-hour time frame or the fact that this novel is shorter than most of the other Bosch books. This time Harry is investigating a murder that has links to terrorism, a timely subject and a good device for author Michael Connelly to use to illustrate the one-up-manship and undercutting that goes on among the various law enforcement agencies that get called in on a big case.

There is a good kicker at the end of the story too, and one that I have to admit I didn't see coming. The Overlook is a good addition to the Bosch series and I recommend it for anyone who likes an entertaining read that is also well written and features interesting characters.

Book Review: Workmanlike but satisfying
Summary: 3 Stars

Although I love Connelly and I found this outing to be adequate for a Bosch "fix," it really didn't grab me the way other Bosch books have. Part of it was because I figured it out too easily, knew too soon what had happened and what was going to happen. I don't know why.

Another disappointment was that it advanced literally nothing in the overall story of Harry Bosch. I know it's hard to keep a character moving when the essence of the character's situation is that it really DOESN'T change, but I want Harry to stop treading water.

It felt like a stop-gap, without enough imagination/innovation, and a little lacking in energy, too.

But of course, if you're a fan like me, you'll enjoy it anyway!

Book Review: This time the details are the downfall...
Summary: 3 Stars

I really like Michael Connelly as a writer. He has creative stories and I think his dialog and location settings are very true to life and believable. He includes little details about the way Harry Bosch moves or acts that really paint a scene like no other writer I can think of. And in his previous books I have really been drawn in by them. The problem with the Overlook is that the details go overboard. Some of the same information is given again and again inorder to set the stage. I found the book tedious and hard to get through and I skipped pages here and there to get on with this story. I am a big fan of Michael Connelly and Harry Bosch and will certainly read his next book. But this one was hard to finish.

Book Review: Fun, fast-moving, interesting
Summary: 4 Stars

The Overlook seems to have gotten mixed reviews but I think its baggage of being originally a newspaper story released in parts (the novel was expanded and deepened a bit) has made fans go into it with the idea that they wouldn't like it. No, it's not the strongest in the series but its pretty exciting in that it's a mystery that's solved in pretty close to a day. The story, involving terrorism, feels very contemporary, and the mystery's ending is pretty surprising, if a little bit unbelievable.

It's an exciting entry in the series and while probably not the best place to start the series it's fun to see Bosch in a story that's more fast-paced and thrilling than usual.
