Book Reviews of The Overlook (Harry Bosch)

Book Review: An Excellent Crime Thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

Michael Connelly strikes once again!! "The Overlook" is a crisp, well written crime novel that grabs the reader quickly and does not let go until the end. The story takes place in less than a day, and in many ways feels like an episode of "24." (That is meant as a compliment.)

Connelly continues to develop Harry Bosch as well as agent Walling. Both are good characters playing good roles. Some reviewers have complained that the book is too short, but the truth is, I like quick reads, so that was not a problem for me.

I have now read four Connelly books, and will definitely read more. "Lincoln Lawyer" remains my favorite, but this one is a fine story.

Book Review: Hollywood what are you waiting for?
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read all of Michael Connelly's novels and to me he just gets better each time out. If I could go back and re-rate all my previous reviews I'd give them all 5 stars. I've realized all his books are highly enjoyable and that all the other authors I've been exposed to who write this kind of crime-fiction don't come close. There's many I can't finish.

In the "Overlook" I really did feel I knew who the killer was early on, and it didn't bother me I was right at the end. I wonder if Connelly wanted it that way?

I keep wondering who should play Harry in a movie??? Maybe Tommy Lee Jones. Linda Fiorentino as Rachel Walling. C'mon Hollywood!

Book Review: Harry and Rachel are together again
Summary: 3 Stars

Harry is called out to an execution style murder as his first assignment in the Homicide Special unit. The FBI takes an interest in the case and Rachel Walling is one of the agents on the scene. As the FBI chases terrorists, Harry continues to pursue the case as a simple murder. His new partner, Iggy, is more conservative than Harry and questions him all along the way. I generally can't figure out "whodunit" in Connelly novels because the plots are so intricate. In The Overlook, I was able to figure out a good bit of the plot very early on. Still, an enjoyable and fast paced Bosch storyline worth reading.

Book Review: A very minor Bosch novel
Summary: 2 Stars

A blown up novella, THE OVERLOOK is a particularly minor addition to Connelly's normally excellent Harry Bosch series. Originally part of the NY Times series of weekly serials, this book worked fairly well as a short story but the expanded version brought nothing to the story. It seems to be basically a way to make another buck on what amounts to a reprint. The story itself is not a bad little mystery, but it could have been easily been part of a series of novellas or at least as part of a collection. As a stand alone, it just doesn't have enough going on to be anything more than an afterthought.

Book Review: Good But Not Great Connelly
Summary: 3 Stars

I guess everybody's entitled to take a break now and then and it looks like Connelly just decided to take it easy on this book. It's a good read -- as is everything Connelly writes -- but it lacks the energy that his other books have. It almost feels like reading a condensed book. Nothing is quite as good as in his other books -- plot, characters, intensity, suspense. I think the fact that it started out as a serialization weakened it. But, I think everybody should read this book --it still is the work of a master craftsman -- but do so knowing that it aint quite as good as his other works.
