Book Reviews of The Pact: A Love StoryBook Review: Smut? Trash? No where close. Summary: 5 Stars
I heard so many people tell me how amazing this book was. How they couldn't put it down. Got it, (of course, knowing me, I was already reading another book.) My sister told me we were going to read it in 12th grade, but I had already waited 2 years, and nothing was going to stop me now.
I sat down and opened this book, its flimsy pages hanging off the side, and couldn't take my eyes off of it. The first little paragraph, what an eye opener. Jodi has such a way of drawing her readers in and feeling the characters feelings. Couldn't put it down. I wish I could give this book ONE MILLION stars, and, in my mind, I do. There has never been a book like this in my life, even when some come close. My mind is full of feelings left over from Chris, Emily, Gus, Melanie, Michael, Jordan, and, even Selena. What happens afterwards? Will they ever be friends again? These questions filling my mind, no answers, just my intuitions.
Jodi Picoult is astounding, her writing so moving. I will, from now on and always, gladly read any of her books.
Read this book, and I gurantee you will fall in love with the author and, more importantly, 'The Pact.'
Book Review: Something Missing Summary: 3 Stars
After you've read a few Jodi Picoult books, you come to expect certain things. A compelling, flashpoint topic (teen suicide, stigmata, school shootings, sexual abuse, etc.) that rips a small New England community apart. Courtroom drama. Finely wrought family dynamics. A maverick lawyer, a quirky judge, and a lot of angst. Tons of plot twists and turns.
All of the above were present in "The Pact," a story of the death of a teenage golden girl, with her longtime boyfriend accused of the murder -- which he claims was a double suicide gone awry. The defendant bobs and weaves as news of Emily's pregnancy comes to light, and plenty of red herrings are thrown into the mix. But still something was missing.
I felt like there just wasn't quite ENOUGH drama in this book... I expected one more horrifying secret to be revealed at the end. I did not believe that Emily's reasons for killing herself were sufficiently grave. And I couldn't believe that NO ONE -- not the police, not his parents, not the lawyer, no one -- asked Chris what really happened that night.
Stilll, with Picoult's wonderful writing, this book is still worth reading.
Book Review: The Pact Summary: 5 Stars
"Let us embrace, and from this very moment vow an eternal misery together," a quote by Thomas Otway, appropriately begins this story of young lovers, giving us a concise glimpse of the plot. This is a story of a love so deep and intimate, that it is difficult to define the boundaries of the two individual personalities of the teens. Raised together since newborns, Chris and Emily grew up together, becoming lovers as teenagers. It was always expected that they would end up together. But when two individuals are so close, and the border separating them as individuals becomes blurred, could one ask too much of the other? Could one go too far in the sacrifice of oneself for the happiness of the other? These are some interesting questions that this story poses to the reader.
Ms Picoult has created some very intriguing characters here, ones that are real enough to provoke thought and emotion. The juxtaposition of the storyline with the past which ultimately led to it, creates a fervent tension. Unexpected twists in the plot are plentiful and intense. This book is more than entertainment. It presents some very potent questions to ponder.
Book Review: Wonderful Wonderful Story Summary: 5 Stars
Picoult does it again! This story is beautifully written about two young teenagers who are in love. One dies abruptly and it is a toss-up between if she was suicidal, or if her boyfriend (and long time best friend/ soulmate) murdered her. This story is very emotional- very forthright and keeps you reading and reading because you simply MUST FIND OUT what happened.
Again, as in all of Picoult's novels, it is a very controversial topic, and there is much lawyer/ cop dialogue that may get your mind bungled- however it is such a poetic story that you will not even hesitate to keep going.
Personally, I fell in love with the main male character and by the end of the book, I HATED the female lead. (I cannot disclose any more details for fear of spoiling the story)
Keep your mind open and try to remember what it was like to be COMPLETELY in love. If we were all so lucky, I truly doubt there would be any murder/ hate/ heinous crimes in this world.
MUST READ- MUST MUST MUST READ.
Book Review: I'm Sold Summary: 5 Stars
This book had so many different elements in it. I don't usually read books that are so serious and I have to say with themes of murder, suicide, abuse, teen pregnancy and adultery this book had a lot of serious elements in it. What made the story so accessible were the characters. I was completely drawn in by the various reactions different characters had to highly stressful situations. Luckily, even with such heavy topics, the story never actually got very dark, or at least not to the point that I felt emotionally disturbed. I was truly interested in being taken on the ride of a murder trial and living through several months in jail. I particularly enjoyed getting into the heads of the four parents in this story and the different way they each react to a terrible situation. The Pact was different for me, but I enjoyed it. I am certain to try another Piccoult book in the near future.
