Book Reviews of The Penderwicks on Gardam Street

Book Review: A Wonderful Sequel!
Summary: 5 Stars

I liked this book much better than the first, which is a rare thing when it comes to sequels. The story itself may not have been as exciting, but I felt the characters were much better developed and we got a more intimate look at their lives. Even though there were no lonely boys hidden away in bedrooms, teenaged gardeners with pet rabbits, mean mothers, evil step fathers to be, angry bulls, or a fancy setting such as Arundel, this story offers much more in terms of life lessons and morals. Again, I found myself unable to put this novel down. A very enjoyable story!

My only criticism of Ms.Birdsall is that she includes too many references to books she used as inspiration for her Penderwick stories. I found it a little annoying and unnecessary.

Book Review: Another great Penderwick read
Summary: 4 Stars

Lovely! I so enjoy these kids!! The story is cute, but not saccharine. There are morals and consequences, but they don't beat you over the head with it and there is lots of love--familial love--which, I believe, everyone years for.

This story finds the Penderwick clan back home (from holiday) and in school and enjoying life. Until their beloved Aunt Claire comes to visit and tries to convince Mr. "Pen" (as he is affectionately called around the neighborhood) that he needs to think about dating again (since the children's mother died soon after "Batty" was born).
Both hilarity AND despair ensue, making this one of the better reads for me this year!!

Highly enjoyable!!

Book Review: a delightful and thoroughly satisfying book
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a children's librarian and run a kids book club for children in grades 3-5. We happen to be reading the first Penderwick book this month, so I thought it would be good for me to quickly read this new book #2. At some point I stopped reading it as a librarian and was completely pulled into the story. This is a lovely book! The characters are strong, well-developed, and believable. The plot has just the right balance of tension, humor, and intrigue. This is one of those rare gems that both parents and kids will find thorougly satisfying. It would make a great read-aloud, too. I'm thrilled to know there's a book #3 in the works.

Book Review: Characters need to toughen up a little
Summary: 3 Stars

My friend made me read this book. I liked some parts but over all the girls we pretty annoying. They are over the top emotional about eeeeverything. Rosalind always ignores this kid and then when he starts ignoring her back she get's angry. What is her problem? I expect the little girl, Batty, to act that way but not the older three girls. I mean come on, it just get's annoying after awhile. It's written very well and is a good story, you should read it for yourself, but personally I prefer books about tough people who suck it up and take charge of the situation.
Read it and decide for yourself!

Book Review: A Enjoyable Read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this book based on the cover. I am glad I did. I feel that this is a finely written and entertaining story. The characters are each different, but so well defined, I could easily imagine them. As a teacher, this type of book allows for a teachable moment in character development. The characters fit nicely in the story and have a wonderful relationship. I feel that new readers or reluctant readers may enjoy meeting the Penderwick family.
