Book Reviews of The Planets

Book Review: More Than Basic Astronomy
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently set upon myself the task of updating my knowledge of the solar system. For readers interested in such things, Dava Sobel's _The Planets_ (2005) is an excellent introduction. You may tell yourself you only want some basic information. But her prose will hook you. Here she is on the Moon (which you may have thought would be the least interesting of solar bodies):

Even as the Moon draws the oceans to and fro, the Earth drags down the Moon with the superior force of its greater mass. The uneasy power struggle between the bodies has slowed the rotation of the Moon to about ten miles per hour. Spinning this slowly, the Moon takes as long to turn on its axis as it takes to complete its monthly 1.5-million-mile orbit. The Earth has thus coerced the Moon into a lock-step pattern of rotation and revolution, called "Earth-lock," that keeps the Moon's same awestruck face trained Earthward at all times. No wonder the man in the Moon looks so familiar. (111-112)

Sobel has her chapter on Mars told from the point of view of a Martian rock. The rock is coy about whether or not there are Martian fossils. But:

My Martian origin, however, I state as indisputable. My constitution mirrors the chemical makeup of rocks and dust examined _in situ_ on the planet's surface and from close orbit by visiting spacecraft... My foreign nature could never have been proven before the current age of spacefaring, and yet I came to Earth without any artificial conveyance. (120-121)

I do not mean to imply that Sobel is sloppy with her science-- she is not. But she intends to give the bodies of the solar system personalities. Thus: Genesis (The Sun), Mythology (Mercury), Beauty (Venus), Geography (Earth), Lunacy (The Moon), Sci-Fi (Mars), Astrology (Jupiter), Music of the Spheres (Saturn), Night Air (Uranus and Neptune), and UFO (Pluto).

Sobel frequently links people with planets. Not surprisingly, Galileo is linked with Jupiter, Clyde Tombaugh is linked with Pluto, and Maria Mitchell is linked with Uranus. More unusual choices are Charles Darwin with Earth and Gustav Holst with Saturn. But Sobel gives good reasons for these selections.

What does Sobel say about the recent "demotion" of Pluto from its planetary status? She notes that as a planet, Pluto could only have been the least of the planets. As a member of the Kuiper belt, it will be the vanguard of hundreds of new worlds. This seems a sensible position to take.

The book has a bibliography, notes, and a glossary-- all quite good.

Summary of The Planets

With her bestsellers Longitude and Galileo's Daughter, Dava Sobel introduced readers to her rare gift for weaving complex scientific concepts into a compelling narrative. Now Sobel brings her full talents to bear on what is perhaps her most ambitious topic to date-the planets of our solar system. Sobel explores the origins and oddities of the planets through the lens of popular culture, from astrology, mythology, and science fiction to art, music, poetry, biography, and history. Written in her characteristically graceful prose, The Planets is a stunningly original celebration of our solar system and offers a distinctive view of our place in the universe.
