Book Reviews of The Player of Games (Culture)

Book Review: Compelling and sad
Summary: 5 Stars

With the possible exception of Excession, this remains my favorite title by my favorite SF author. Part of the reason is that the narrative shares the structure of the underlying contest; this makes the book's structure more linear than many of Banks' Culture offerings. The other part of the reason is the vividness of all the characters, which are perhaps somewhat more extreme and colorful than Banks usually allows himself.

Book Review: Excellent book
Summary: 5 Stars

For people looking for a SciFi novel with glorious battles and amazing technology and scenery, this is not the book (or series) for you.

This novel excels as a character development story that happens to be set in a Science Fiction universe, which I think allows Mr. Banks to devise ways to enhance the story, rather than become the story itself.

Book Review: Interesting Culture story, but a bit lacking
Summary: 4 Stars

As one just getting into the whole Culture series, I found this second story good and captivating, but felt a bit let down at the end of it. I do like that it is from the Culture perspective in this story, giving the insider point of view. How they view GSVs and whatnot. In any matter, still a good read and a must as part of the series. I

Book Review: a short story made long
Summary: 3 Stars

better say a good short story made too long.
the main idea of the book is very good: someone is playing games for his living, and he encounters a game which is life itself.
but most of the book describes in length this someone playing a game which you can't actually understand. and that is getting real boring after a while.

Book Review: couldn't finish it
Summary: 1 Stars

This novel could have used an editor. Extremely slow and predictable -- I usually finish any book I start reading, but completely lost interest in this one about two thirds of the way through.
