Book Reviews of The Pocket Parent

Book Review: go ahead and get it
Summary: 5 Stars

I was resistant to getting this book but it kept popping up as I browsed and decided to go for it since it was so highly recommended. I'm glad I did. It's really handy!

I enjoy the dimensions and feel of the book, its smallish and tidy and seems like a tough book that will be able to handle getting wet or thrown across the room (two likely scenarios with my youngin'!). I like how it is organized, the way the information is presented, easy to scan.

Its wisdom is built on many other parenting books. This is a great 'cliff notes' version of popular parenting wisdom, to remind you of what you know.

It also has these little 'take heart' sections that say 'you are not the only parent who has..." which I like because there is so much GUILT with parenting, and its nice to lighten up and feel comradarie with all the other parents out there.

Book Review: Pretty Good Book
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was very simple. I got it for that very reason, I have a 2 year old who is running the show and a new baby -- I needed help quick! After reading it by skipping around to various needed chapters, I learned that it had a quick underlying theme that is consistent throughout the book. Once you get that, it becomes less helpful. It was a good message and has been helpful in teaching me to avoid arguments with my 2-yr old, but I found that I am left wanting more information about all these issues. I like the book recommendations in the back, though, they recommended age-appropriate children's books that help kids through difficult situations, like potty training, family deaths, new baby, etc. I will open this book again, if we are faced with difficult situations and want to find some helpful books that will help our kids through the crisis.

Book Review: Practical, sanity-saving wisdom for every parent!
Summary: 5 Stars

As a parent of a strong-willed preschooler, The Pocket Parent is THE place to go for all the answers! The A to Z format allows me to pinpoint an issue I'm having with my child, whether it's anger, mealtime issues, tantrums etc., then I flip to the right page for some very positive and easy-to-follow advice with a touch of humor. The book is filled with personal anecdotes...some made me laugh, some touched me profoundly..all were very insightful.
This is the best parenting resource book I've found. It's easy and enjoyable to read. Best of all, it's so warmly-written and supportive, it's like getting a big reassuring hug with every turn of the page.
Thanks to Gail Reichlin and Caroline Winkler for a terrific book filled with practical, sanity-saving wisdom. It's perfect for any parent or caregiver of young children!

Book Review: a whimsical stocking stuffer
Summary: 3 Stars

True to the title the Pocket Parent does fit exactly there. However, I'm not sure how many parents will carry it around for those "quick fix" moments (a creative packaging concept?). The book does have some helpful hints for the little ones which we all need as parents from time to time. The tips, however, seem to be more of a witty compilation of tried and true tricks from a collective group of parents. This same group seemed to throw in the supportive comments to one another for good measure. All in all it seems to be on par with most of what's out there. As a parent, I was looking for more in-depth ideas from professionals and ways to develop my child for the long term - not just in the grocery store. Also, I could do without the peer-parent coddling of my worth as I try to manage the children.

Book Review: quick reference
Summary: 3 Stars

As other reviewers have said, this is a quick reference to many questions you might have about your toddler's behaviors & "quick" ways to help diffuse frustrating situations. I haven't finished the book because I started to read Dr. Karp's "The Happiest Toddler on the Block". I read reviews on both books before purchasing and decided to give them both a chance. Although Dr. Karp suggests that our toddlers are "little cavepeople", his way of discipline through very few words does work. Once you bring yourself down to your child's level of language - they listen to you. I'm glad I purchased this book even though I'm finding the "Happiest Toddler" book to be more helpful - this one is good for my husband to flip open to a section (which are only a few pages) to give a quick read.
