Book Reviews of The Pocket ParentBook Review: Superb ! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the answer for parents who do not have the time to read huge books on crisis control when it comes to energy draining toddlers climbing the walls of parental tolerance!
The book covers the classic problems of toddlerhood and provides simple solutions. The index leads you to a right on message that can be read in just a couple of minutes. And for those who have more time to spend, there is a list of books for further read on each subject.
We have other books that are more in depth but tend to just collect dust in our household. Finding time for books is hard when pressed for time, but this one we use A LOT and would even take with us on travel.
A highly recommended book in deed!
Book Review: Great Resource for Parents and Teachers! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a Preschool/Kindergarten teacher. I place this book on a shelf with other Parent Resource books located at the entrance to my classroom. These books can then be signed out by the parents.
I cannot tell you how many parents have praised this book! I saw a difference in my classroom immediately upon implementing some of the strategies myself. It is a quick, easy, and very funny read so the information sticks.
Another book, Teaching with Love & Logic by Jim Fay & David Funk is a more in-depth, educator-based book that echoes the same principles. The portability and quick-reference layout makes this book a must-have for parents- as well as teachers- of young children.
Love it, love it, love it!
Book Review: A quick resource for the glove compartment Summary: 4 Stars
I've sent a copy of this book as gifts to several first time moms with toddlers because it's such a quicky, handy resource when you're on the go, which seems to be the whole point. As the mother of 3 kids, the oldest being almost 10, I've seen what's out there, but I haven't come across anything that encompasses the "headlines" about parenting in a nutshell. The book is upbeat with a warm tone and offers invaluable tips for most stuations that 2-5 year old's get into. Is it the last word on raising toddlers? If it were, it would be the size of Webster's Dictionary, but as a handy little guru-in-the-pocket I do find myself confirming many of the decisions I make when it comes to dealing with my willful 2-year old.
Book Review: Good Bathroom Book! Summary: 4 Stars
Cute little book, although I can't say I've read it cover-to-cover (the only ones that I do read that way are novels). Some of the advice is not new or unique, but the authors sometimes offer a few alteratives, which is helpful since no one strategy works for every child. My one crtiticism is that the authors refer to themselves for most of the experiences they write about--it gets old reading the same names over & over--they should have made-up some names in order to cut down on the repetitiveness (and the impression that the book is about them rather than parenting tips). But my husband & I love to thumb through it during our time in "the office."
Book Review: THE PARENT GIVES TIME OUT TO SELF???? I DON'T THINK SO! Summary: 1 Stars
I will never send myself to my room which is what this book says to do when angry. This certainly is not a technique to deal with the situation. It just separates you from the situation instead of managing it. It also repeats other parents are going through the same challenges as you are going through. No kidding. I was expecting much more from The Pocket Parent. "Parenting with Love & Logic" is by far a better book!!! I started trying the techniques suggested in Parenting with Love and Logic immediately with amazing results!!! It eliminates all anger and frustration plus addresses all the challenges of raising children of all ages.
