The Politically Incorrect Guides tend to have two things in common. The authors genuflect before 'leaders' like Gingrich The Newt, Rowdy Rush Limbaugh, Sarah the Born Again Bimbo, and Graveyard Dick Cheney and the authors trace all the world's problems back to 'the sad and rueful day when the tyrant Lincoln came and took all our beloved darkies away'. Imagine that line sung with sweeping violins. They apparently believe in a mythical land where rich white folks drink mint juleps and the slaves toil happily while singing in the cotton fields.
The authors offer no new insights or solutions. They only seek to replace the new status quo(be it bad or good) with the old, discarded status quo, which was discarded in the first place because it was so inhumane. Sweat shops? Being whipped or sold? Ten year olds working in the mill? Yeh, give me more! So they brew up a noxious mixture of factoids, half-truths, vicious lies, and faulty reasoning, then try to trick people into buying their poison cocktail by pretending to speak 'The Truth'.
Do yourselves a favor and check out the pieces of history that the PIGs don't mention, like the horrors of slavery, the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, the Ludlow Massacre, the widespread lynching of minorities, the number of children working in mines and mills, women as property, Black Lung Disease, and recent debacles like Enron and AIG. Then thank the Unions, the Progressives, and the liberals for your rights. I'm not saying they're perfect, but I'm saying that the systems the PIGs support generally consist of the rich and powerful exploiting and oppressing everyone else.
I can hardly wait for the PIG guide to WWII, in which the author proves that Roosevelt and the ghost of Abe Lincoln started the war, that Hitler was a nice guy but misunderstood, that what Hitler did in other countries and at home was none of our business, and that the Jews either made up the Holocaust or were asking for it. Complete with random factoids and a picture of General Theodophilus P. Beauregard on the front cover.
If I want to hear hate mongering paranoia, I ride a city bus. I get to go somewhere and the whack job/con artist behind the rant doesn't try to sell me his book.

Almost everything you know about American history is wrong, because most textbooks and popular history books are written by left-wing academic historians who treat their biases as fact. But fear not, Professor Thomas Woods has written the perfect antidote. This delightful book--funny and inviting, but factually sound--shatters the myths about American history and separates fact from fiction.Claiming that most textbooks and popular history books were written by biased left-wing writers and scholars, historian Thomas Woods offers this guide as an alternative to "the stale and predictable platitudes of mainstream texts." Covering the colonial era through the Clinton administration, Woods seeks to debunk some persistent myths about American history. For instance, he writes, the Puritans were not racists intent on stealing the Indians' lands, the Founding Fathers were not revolutionaries but conservatives in the true sense of the word, the American War Between the States (to even call it a civil war is inaccurate, Woods says) was not principally about slavery, Abraham Lincoln was no friend to the slaves, and FDR's New Deal policies actually made the Depression worse. He also covers a wide range of constitutional interpretations over the years, particularly regarding the First, Second, Ninth, and Tenth amendments, and continually makes the point that states' rights have been unlawfully trampled upon by the federal government since the early days of the republic. Though its title is more deliberately provocative than accurate, Woods' attack on what he sees as rampant liberal revisionism over the past 25 years proves to be an interesting platform for a book. He's as biased as those he rails against, of course, but he does provoke thought in an entertaining way even if he sometimes tries to pass off opinion as hard facts.
This quick and enjoyable read is packed with unfamiliar quotes, informative sidebars, iconoclastic viewpoints, and a list of books "you're not supposed to read." It is not a comprehensive or detailed study, but that is not its aim; instead, it offers ideas for further research and a challenge to readers to dig deeper and analyze some basic assumptions about American history--a worthy goal that Woods manages to reach. --Shawn Carkonen
