Book Review: The Potty Book - For Boys

ISBN 0764152327 - I'm not the best person to review a potty training book. My son is an adult, for one thing. His potty training took days when he was 14 months old and he never used a potty. So my review is of the book itself, rather than of the effectiveness of it as a toilet training tool.
Henry is a happy child who has lots of fun. Before he can get started each day, however, he has to get his diaper changed. One day, Mommy has a large box just for Henry. Inside is his very own potty, for when he's ready to try it. It takes him time and he has some setbacks, but eventually the big day comes - Henry uses the potty successfully! Henry assures the reader that they, too, can do it.
Things to know: Clearly they use the word "potty". Personally, I prefer the word toilet, and other parents might use other terms. Henry uses the words "pee" and "poop"; you may prefer other terms and even your child's preschool or babysitter can be a factor in the choice. (For example, I know of a preschool that teaches the kids to say "I need to use it", without specifying what "it" is.) Henry has a mother and father, while your child may have one parent or two parents of the same gender. Henry uses a little potty on the floor; some parents may simply opt to use the toilet. None of those things mean anything to me but may be factors in your decision to use this book.
The rhyming text, by author Alyssa Satin Capucilli, is okay, but gets stilted every now and then. The rhyme starts out smoothly, with the rhyming parts on each set of facing pages, but it gets clunky as the second line of the rhyme is eventually moved onto the next page. Illustrator Dorothy Stott's images are basic and cute and, although they're not terribly special, they do capture the text well, especially Henry's happiness when he is finally free of his diapers.

Every little boy's graduation from diapers to the potty is always a very important moment--and one to make both parents and toddlers proud! In The Potty Book, Henry needs to have his diapers changed so he can go out and play. Then mom and dad bring home a big box, and Henry is anxious to open it up and see what's inside. Is it a rocking chair? A bed for Teddy? No, it's a potty--which means that it's time for Henry to graduate from his diapers. This gentle and humorous little story is charmingly illustrated and told in verse. Little boys will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the story read to them. Meanwhile, they'll start getting the idea that it's time for them to grow up, exactly like Henry. So that at last, they'll be able to say--"I'm off the potty!"Issues Books
