Book Reviews of The Potty Book - For Girls

Book Review: There's a particularly unhelpful picture in the book
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is cute, but I'm no longer using it because I have a couple of problems with it:

1) Some of you may believe, as I do, that "Don't" messages are confusing and unclear for children. This is why in schools, teachers often will say "Walk" rather than "Don't run," because kids will get an immediate visual image of "run," and take off running -- and there's no visual image for the word "don't." Along those lines: there's a particular picture in this book that shows Hannah (admittedly looking a bit unhappy) standing behind a puddle of pee on the floor, with her potty nearby, and the caption says says, "Some days I hurry to the potty. Woops! I am too late." I understand this was included to show the natural progression of setbacks which are part of the process. However, I think it sends the wrong message to have a picture of what NOT to do. For my 2 year old, that picture (regardless of caption) is her visual clue that peeing on the carpet is A-OK. She'll say, "Hannah pee floor!" -- and then she pees on the floor herself, right near her potty -- just like Hannah. Granted, we're not very far into potty training. But, so far, this frustrating picture has given my child a visual instruction of what's normal. Thus, despite some other good pictures showing what she should do, overall this book has done more harm than good, causing me to stop showing her this book, so she can pick up more valuable messages about what she actually should do in other books and places.

2) I think the message that Hannah is proud of *herself* is great. Personally, I don't like the message of emphasis on the pride that mom, dad and grandma take in Hannah's potty training. This is because, as a Montessori follower, I'm of the school of thought that it's vital to show no pride in a child's accomplishment over his/her own body, but rather just to maintain normalcy about it, because children do things to take pleasure in their own learning and hitting a milestone like walking and talking, not to please their parents, but to emulate parents and become a member of society. I don't want my daughter to grow up to be a praise junkie, motivated by the expression on my face or what I tell her about her value/worth (or for that matter by M&Ms/stickers, or by punishment); I want her to be motivated by her own desire to accomplish things, and then by her sense of accomplishment. Idealistic of me, perhaps. :)

Summary of The Potty Book - For Girls

Every little girl's graduation from diapers to the potty is always a very important moment--and one to make both parents and toddlers proud! In The Potty Book, Hannah needs to have her diapers changed so she can go out and play. Then mom and dad bring home a big box, and Hannah is anxious to open it up and see what's inside. Is it a rocking chair? A bed for Teddy? No, it's a potty--which means that it's time for Hannah to graduate from her diapers. This gentle and humorous little story is charmingly illustrated and told in verse. Little girls will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the story read to them. Meanwhile, they'll start getting the idea that it's time for them to grow up, exactly like Hannah. So that at last, they'll be able to say--"I'm off the potty!"
