Book Reviews of The PowerScore LSAT Logic Games BibleBook Review: Forget Princeton and Kaplan Summary: 5 Stars
First the numbers: I went from scoring only about half correct on the games section both before and after Princeton Review. After PowerScore, I consistently scored between 20/22 to 24/24 on game sections on LSAC Released PrepTests.
After hearing mixed reviews about Kaplan, I took courses with Princeton Review. My first diagnostic was abysmal, but with subsequent tests they increased incrementally. I must say that Princeton helped, but it did not deliver the way I wanted it to. If you are the type of student that needs instruction to stay focused, then a course with Kaplan or Princeton might help (though law students require an absolutely dedicated mindset outside of the classroom as well as in it!) But if you learn just fine on your own, then shelling out a thousand dollars or more on a course is more of a scam if you are expecting dramatic increases. Buy Powerscore materials (and LSAC SuperPrep books) and devote yourself to hours of self study!
Here's my situation:
The Analytical Reasoning (Games) is the hardest section for most of us, and it was this section that was keeping my scores down.
I heard that it's best to try different approaches to the LSAT. A friend swayed me away from Kaplan. I was already frustrated with Princeton Review. Three-quarters of my way through Princeton Review, I got a steady, but still mediocre score on a diagnostic. I had enough and felt my hours of study with Princeton were a waste.
I turned to Powerscore. It wasn't as well known, but it had great reviews. After paying the big bucks for Princeton's class, a used copy of the Logic Games Bible didn't seem so bad.
Powerscore breaks down the games more than Princeton Review does. Upon first opening the Logic Games Bible, I thought the first few chapters would be review. I thought I would skim them since Linear Games and Grouping Games were already covered by my Princeton Review course. But what ended up happening was I was exposed to how much detail Princeton Review lacked. The first couple chapters of the Logic Games Bible taught me more about the games than Princeton Review did in three-quarters of its entire course.
The Logic Games Bible shows you what Powerscore does correctly and its competitors (Princeton and Kaplan) do incorrectly. For example, they totally undermine the entire "grid" system propagated by Princeton Review. It points out the flaws of Kaplan's and Princeton's approaches. It took major adjusting for me at first, but in the end it helped tremendously. Powerscore's method looks barren and skeletal, but in actuality, it's far more intuitive and time-saving. Of course, there are many ways to approach games, but let's be real! Some ways are better than others, and Powerscore's ways are by far the best I've seen.
Each chapter is devoted to a specific game type and each game type is broken down systematically. Drills are used to reinforce your skills to the smallest detail, and actual LSAT games are used at the end of each chapter to tie it all together. What I absolutely loved about the book is the way it explains all the right and wrong answers in such detail that it makes Kaplan and Princeton seem unworthy of your money.
When you take a look inside the Logic Games Bible, you may be intimidated. There is a lot of pure reading. The way Powerscore diagrams rules and situations may seem unfamiliar and rudamentary. But when you are actually DOING it all, you'll wonder why you even gave Princeton or Kaplan a chance. The Logic Games Bible is a cut-and-dry, "no B.S." approach that has one goal in mind = dramatic increases in your score.
Kaplan and Princeton might get you (on average) a 5 point increase in your score. Yes, each student/test taker is different and requires different needs, and each will have a different outcome from whatever method they choose. But I don't think $1000 for just an average increase is worth it. This book, Powerscore's Logical Reasoning Bible, the LSAC SuperPrep materials, and hours of self-enforced study time is the way to go for effective (and cost-effective) LSAT preparation.
After this book, games seemed more intuitive and (gasp) almost fun. The book is definitely a confidence booster. In the my last diagnostic exam under Princeton, I was apprehensive. I thought, I shouldn't be so apprehensive about games three-quarters through the course when I should have learned most of the ins and outs of this section! After Powerscore, this was no longer and issue.
I should stress: You MUST be prepared to devote hours to this book. I'd recommend going through the Games Bible (and the Logical Reasoning Bible) at least twice each a couple months before the test.
