Book Reviews of The Practice of the Presence of God

Book Review: A gentle push towards a daily relationship with God.
Summary: 5 Stars

Monks have it easy. They spend all day, every day, praying and going to mass and taking communion and being in relationship with God.

But what about those of us with real lives? Kids, pets, careers, grocery shopping? How do WE stay connected to God throughout our busy days?

This has been a challenge for me as a new Christian. Enter Brother Lawrence. His simple letters remind all of us how we can put God front and center, even in the midst of our normal lives. Make every act a prayer. Wash some dishes with the Beloved. Invite God to your PTA meetings. He reminds us that the most mundane acts can be acts of worship. It is a powerful, simple, and loving book.

Book Review: A Book for all Seasons
Summary: 5 Stars

A small and simple book with a message of inner peace coming to us from the 1600's. The language may be a bit dated for some but Brother Lawrence speaks the language of the heart. It's probably not a book for people at the top of their game. Not because it wouldn't serve them there but because it's harder to hear the language of the heart when we're at the top of our game. For those who long for lasting peace and contentment, those whose hearts cry out because of loss or staleness, this is a good companion in life. After forty years I still find refreshment for my soul when I read it. A great book for those who have ears to hear and a heart that can listen.

Book Review: Christian meditation
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is an excellent, easy-to-read and thought provoking work. The words are those of Brother Lawrence, a simple Carmelite who --through conversations and letters to a friend--tells about his spiritual journey and how he learned to practice the presence of God. It is a classic, yet is small (less than 100 pages) and pocket sized so that you can read it anywhere and anytime. I think I will take it with me on my next flight and read it all over again. A real joy.

Book Review: Presence
Summary: 4 Stars

I thought that this was a great piece of work to think through the omnipresence of God. Go is always there and we can seek to practice the awareness of God's presence.

Book Review: Learning to walk with God
Summary: 4 Stars

Reading the book by Brother Lawrence helped me know God a little better. I learned that He desires for us to talk to Him, to commune with Him, every minute of the day. I suppose that is why the Garden of Eden was so precious to Him. He looked forward to walking and talking with Adam.

If Brother Lawrence learned to do it during all his waking hours, well then I guess most all of us aught to be able to do it too, providing we have the faith.
