Book Reviews of The Private Patient (Vintage)Book Review: Huh? Summary: 2 Stars
I am a big fan of murder mysteries, and have read every book written by deborah crombie...instead of going back through her wonderful collection, I thought I would broaden my horizons and look for other similar authors. This book was touted as being similar in style to the previously mentioned author, and had tons of great reviews, so I have PD James a go at it. I have to say, I was completely lost...I must be too simple minded or something, or maybe reading this book to fall asleep is not an activity that lends itself well to comprehension of the elaborate story line. I was tempted at one point to make notes about each of the numerous characters so I could follow more easily...unfortunately, I never did. I am sorry to say that I am not a huge fan of the book, and will be hunting for a new author to fill the time until mrs. crombie completes her next novel...I am open to additional suggestions...anyone?!?
Book Review: Enjoyable, but nothing special Summary: 3 Stars
This crime story is rather predictable and, for those with high expectations of P.D. James, a little disappointing.
It's a reasonable story, and I would recommend it to my friends as a crime story if you don't have anything more compelling in your to-read pile. There are a few inconsistencies and inaccuracies.
Towards the end of the book, in "Book 4," chapters 5 and 6, there is a sequence of events which would be absolutely impossible. I can't say more without spoiling the story for you, but you will see when you get there. It is ridiculous!
Anyway, I am glad that I read this book, but it's not the best crime thriller that I hace ever read. Not the worst either, by a long chalk.
Book Review: Start in the middle Summary: 3 Stars
The first half of the book is spent creakily wheeling the characters and plot into position. One can start at about the point where AD is interviewing the cast of possible suspects in the library without any real loss. Unfortunately that is where I dropped out, the prospect of two hundred more pages of AD plodding around being too much to contemplate. It seems, from reading the end, that most of the action and character revelation occurs in the last half. So save your energy if you are going to read this book, and start in the middle.
Book Review: Another good read from PD James Summary: 4 Stars
PD James once again has succeeded in providing a mystery that leaves little clues like breadcrumbs all along the trail to the end. Lionel Twain of "Murder by Death" would be pleased, particularly in the great detective who doesn't always solve the case as he would like and is himself left dissatisfied with the result, as happens frequently with Dalgliesh mysteries. Here's hoping for at least one more.
Book Review: Not her best Summary: 4 Stars
I have read all of P D James mysteries that I know about and while this had a very good story line, it really dragged and got caught up in details. I do not need to know when and where and what everybody had for every meal. On the other hand, when AD is called on to solve another murder, I will be there.
