Book Reviews of The Prosecution of George W. Bush for MurderBook Review: a more devastating indictment of W you could not imagine Summary: 5 Stars
This is what happens when you elect (and then RE-elect!) a former cocaine-sniffing alcoholic characterless born-again moron for president. Americans evidently cannot appreciate just how aghast the rest of the world was that this kind of creep could slime his way into the highest office, not just once, but twice. Bush's horrid eight years just ooze decadence and decline. A big problem with Republicans in general is that they often deliberately back twits, because they know that twits can be manipulated to serve powerful special interests. George W. was America's first taste (or was it the second?) of an Alfred E. Neuman presidency.
While neither the military-industrial-congressional complex nor the oil companies were about to take to the streets to join protests against the impending invasion of Iraq, the deciding factor in whipping up war fever amongst elites and the public may have been something else. See 'The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy' by Mearsheimer & Walt, which blames the invasion of Iraq squarely on that lobby. While Bugliosi's book is one of the most courageous books I've ever read, he does tiptoe daintily around the possibility of the invasion serving the interests of Israel directly and the interests of the U.S. not even indirectly. He does note Zbigniew Brzezinski's remark that "the political roots of the terrorist atrocity of September 11" lie in American "support of Israel and Israel's treatment of the Palestinians" which fermented "the main impulse of hatred that has been directed ar America." But you have to go to his footnotes at the back to read: "[A]s early as 1996, three neo conservatives--Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and David Wurmser, all of whom ended up in the Bush administration--published a paper called "Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm." The paper recommended invading Iraq and deposing Hussein not to remake the Middle East so that it would be less of a threat to the United States, but less of a threat to Israel, a declared enemy of Hussein's. Indeed, the paper said that after Hussein was toppled, a leader should be installed to head Iraq who was friendly to Israel. IF the monstrous Iraq war, with its incalculable losses and suffering, was all about helping out our friend Israel, (which supported our invasion of Iraq), not the United Staes, do I have to say how serious the implications of this are?" Well, he spells out everything else in this book, but this he recoils from elaborating upon. Yes, Bush was too dumb to be anything but a puppet, but a puppet of whom (re. Middle East questions)? For an answer certainly worth contemplating, start with the Mearsheimer & Walt book and then proceed to Stephen J. Sniegowski's 'The Transparent Cabal: The Neoconservative Agenda, War in the Middle East, and the National Interest of Israel'.
When erstwhile Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan pinned the blame for the Iraq fiasco on oil interests, surely this was a classic example of the magician's art of distraction. Typically, Greenspan would have been one of the last to resort to accusing mega-powerful interests, but by doing so he was averting eyes from high-level involvement by some of his co-ethnics, a matter of ethnic identity and loyalty perhaps trumping class loyalties. Greenspan had once been a devoted follower of Ayn Rand (see the book 'The Ayn Rand Cult') and Rand was herself both Jewish and an outspoken advocate of and financial donor to Israel, as well as a despiser of the "primitive savages" of the Arab world. Since her death, the Ayn Rand Institute in California has sometimes even 'flown' the Israeli flag at its website, a virtual invitation to being tarred as a component of the Israel lobby. Of course, for Jewish neo-cons, the destruction of Iraq was hopefully a mere warm-up for the destruction of Iran, and many neo-cons and Randians (like her heir Leonard Peikoff) would have much preferred to have gone straight to the latter. The Randians may even become a factor in the 2012 election, given the movie release of Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged' in three parts starting with Part I in mid-April 2011. So don't be surprised to hear rhetoric twinning pro-laissez-faire capitalism with 'let's attack Iran'.
Yes, I would love to see a courtroom indictment of George W., but partly as a way of exposing the possibly anti-American interests of several of his closest advisors, advisors whose meddling turned out to be supremely effective in tilting Supreme Commander Alfred E. Neuman toward war on Iraq (which, ironically, by its failure has empowered Iran in the region).
Good luck on your quest Vincent Bugliosi. Your book may be one of the most viscious tirades I've ever seen in print, but sadly, ALL OF IT is justified by known facts.
Summary of The Prosecution of George W. Bush for MurderFamed Charles Manson prosecutor and three time #1 New York Times bestselling author Vincent Bugliosi has written the most powerful, explosive, and thought-provoking book of his storied career. In The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder, Bugliosi presents a tight, meticulously researched legal case that puts George W. Bush on trial in an American courtroom for the murder of nearly 4,000 American soldiers fighting the war in Iraq. Bugliosi sets forth the legal architecture and incontrovertible evidence that President Bush took this nation to war in Iraq under false pretenses?a war that has not only caused the deaths of American soldiers but also over 100,000 innocent Iraqi men, women, and children; cost the United States over one trillion dollars thus far with no end in sight; and alienated many American allies in the Western world. As a prosecutor who is dedicated to seeking justice, Bugliosi, in his inimitable style, delivers a non-partisan argument, free from party lines and instead based upon hard facts and pure objectivity. A searing indictment of the President and his administration, The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder also outlines a legally credible pathway to holding our highest government officials accountable for their actions, thereby creating a framework for future occupants of the oval office. Vincent Bugliosi calls for the United States of America to return to the great nation it once was and can be again. He believes the first step to achieving this goal is to bring those responsible for the war in Iraq to justice.
