Book Reviews of The Pursuit of HappynessBook Review: Fantastic book, wonderful inspiration! Summary: 5 Stars
I have really loved this book. I was looking for inspiration to get myself into action and to overcome quite a few important challenges in my life, and this book has really done it. I can really relate to the author Chris Gardner on so many aspects. For a start, I too am a single mother, and I could really feel for him when he was homeless with his toddler in the streets of Chicago, at the same time as trying to achieve his dream of starting a career as a broker (and getting out of poverty). The book is full of memorable and inspiring moments of his first 50 years of life, without ever loosing HOPE and his wonderful sense of humour! I have specially liked its message that it's all about DOING: working hard and persevering to achieve your goals and keeping focused. No magical thinking! It's extremely down to earth and empowering at the same time. Thank you so much Chris Gardner for sharing so much about yourself!
Book Review: Enjoyable and Well Written Summary: 4 Stars
I by all means enjoyed every aspect of the book. After reading the book, the movie is a completely vague vague vague discription of what exactly occured during his life. Chris Gardner is the ideal black man that you see struggling and make it to the top. Some parts of the story did upset me though. Parts where he slept outside with his son although knowign he had money in his pocket but didn't want to waste it. Or taking money from hookers so they could eat every day. I question his tactics in ensuring they got by. Although he did struggle, there were many nights he didn't have to sleep outside but he was just rather cheap to ensure he had a bed to lie in for the night. Otherwise the book was great, I love the excelletn discription of his childhood that is given in the beginning but I like the fact that he was a quick leaner and learned to master many different things growing up.
Book Review: Pursuit of Happyness Summary: 4 Stars
My book group read this book and then we'll see the DVD. I haven't seen the DVD yet.
I thought the book was inspiring.
I also thought it was a tribute to the power of a boy learning to read. His mother told him, " a library is a dangerous place." Mr. Gardner could not have achieved the success that he did had he not been able to read clearly and learn.
I don't know if my children will have as much inspiration from me as he did from his mother. I can only hope so. I found it to be a little bit like the book "Hope in things unseen."
Overall I enjoyed the book and think that Mr. Garnder's story is one that should inspire others. Stock brokers aren't usually held up as success stories, but your chances are a heck of a lot better than being a pro sports player or musician, so it's good to have some business-oriented role models.
Book Review: Warning Summary: 1 Stars
I am going to write the warning I wish I had read before I started The Pursuit of Happyness. I read an article in a magazine about the movie and Will Smith. I was so intrigued by the idea of this self made man I asked for the book for Christmas. I was excited to start the book and it did start out well. When the author switches to Chris's childhood, it goes down hill rapidly from there. Graphic and disgusting language begins. By the time the book gets to Chris's puberty, it is all over for me. I am surprised that the editor did not clean up the lanugauge or edit graphic descriptions for clarity and readibility. There was so much grossness in description, that the story line was lost. I think as a work of literature, this book failed. There is definitly a story to be shared by Chris Gardner, but he chose the wrong co-author and editor to help him tell his amazing story.
