Book Review: favorite gift for new parents

This is a wonderful and important resource for parents. The first half of the book stresses the life-long benefit (and joy) of reading to your children in contrast to the harm of too little reading and too much/too early TV. The second half lists books that children love, giving you a tool for book selection. The result is children who love to read and are therefore naturally good readers, spellers, writers, and students. I always give this book to first time parents along with an appropriate baby book.Book Review: Simple advice...Read to your children

The research and explanations he gives for reading should motivate everyone to read. Funny thing is...the people who need to read this book probably won't because they don't like to read...so they don't read to children. Great points and goes hand in hand with information learned from college in the education department. Take the time to read to your kids...if you need drive to do it? Read his book. Kids don't come with directions, and common sense isn't too common, so there is the outside chance that we aren't necessarily inspiring a love of learning and a love of reading in our children. I appreciated the research-based information that was applied to give practical application. I learned a lot--and I'm a librarian with many years of teaching experience. So far I have bought 20 copies of this book for friends and family. I know it can make a difference!

I am a elementary teacher and I think this book is awesome! It is important for teachers and parents alike. I wish I'd seen it when my children were babies. If more parents read this it could make a real difference with their children's reading abilities and attitudes.
I bought one for my daughter who is a middle school reading teacher and one for my son and his wife who are about to have a baby. Next I'm buying one for my student teacher. EXCELLENT!

This book is appropriate for every caring parent. I am a homeschooling mother of three and I can't recommend it highly enough. After reading the library's copy I had to buy my own copy, plus several for friends and family members who have kids. It is full of high-quality info and ideas about reading to children, and about them ultimately reading to themselves. There is also an organized and valuable "recommended books" list in the back. Wonderful!
