Book Reviews of The Reef Aquarium, Vol. 3: Science, Art, and Technology

Book Review: Great book to have
Summary: 4 Stars

This is without question an excellent book if you are interested in not only the setup of a reef tank but you also want to know more about the science and technical aspects of setting up and maintaining a reef tank. If you're just getting into setting up your first tank this may be prove to be a bit daunting because it is a huge amount of information to take in. This book seems to cater to either the very small or very large setup and not really to a first time reef setup. It's also kind of sad that they reference a lot of material that's more than a decade old but I think that's because as much as home aquarium technology has advanced it is still relatively young and of course the concern of the impact that the aquarium trade is having on the worlds natural reef environments as well. It does have some valuable information so I would still recommend it but there are better books out there and plenty of information on-line that will provide direct information without all of the fluff on how to setup your first reef tank, this book will help you in maintaining it to the highest level. Another great way to get help is to make a trip to your local Tropical Fish store and establish a relationship with a knowledgeable staff member or the owner. Most owners and staff members will enthusiastically share information and advice with you and you will also get to see firsthand the equipment you will need which in some cases is priced lower than online stores. You can also look at the aquariums that are setup in the shop and if you see one you particularly like don't hesitate to ask the staff how the tank is setup, what lights are used, how is it filtered, what skimmer they use and any other equipment that is used and what it's stocked with. That's how I did it, not only was I able save a substantial amount of money on my first reef tank I now have a solid business relationship with this store and I get a few perks like help with sick fish, quarantine of fish, cured live rock at uncured prices (they cure it for me) and great deals on equipment upgrades. Bottom line, yes buy the book even if you're setting up your first reef tank, better yet buy the whole series if you can, but also get something like "The New Marine Aquarium" by Michael S. Paletta, or subscribe to "Tropical Fish Hobbyist" and of course by all means go to a real (not Petco) Topical Fish and Aquarium store.

Summary of The Reef Aquarium, Vol. 3: Science, Art, and Technology

The Reef Aquarium Volume Three: Science, Art, and Technology Reefkeeping science involves the interplay of biology, chemistry, and physics. However, a reef aquarium is not simply a product of scientific knowledge. The application of engineering and its product technology, makes it possible to duplicate the specific biological, chemical, and physical requirements of a coral reef in a relatively small volume of water. This third volume in The Reef Aquarium series, provides the most thorough description of the science behind the creation of a captive reef, and critically reviews and explains the different philosophical approaches to reef aquarium design. It also describes and illustrates the existing as well as emerging technology for building reef aquariums, to help guide the selection of equipment, its proper use, and installation. While science and technology afford the blank canvas and tools to build a suitable life support system, the plants, animals, and of course the aquarist provide the final ingredient that we call art. This art also involves the system design as it relates to the living space, the aesthetic appearance of the display, and its ease of maintenance, safety, and functionality. To this end, this book provides a wealth of information regarding aquascaping techniques, which combine art, biology, and physics; and invaluable information regarding plumbing, electrical, and other aspects of the aquarium design that combine art and engineering. Lastly, this book discusses the benefits and potential environmental impacts of the marine aquarium hobby, the challenges for its future, and possible new directions. The Reef Aquarium volume three is the essential manual for all reef aquarium hobbyists, professional aquarists, and coral reef researchers who study, create, and enjoy coral reef ecosystems in the confines of an aquarium.
