Review of The Rescue
Recently, I read the book The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks. Sparks is an author with many books on the New York Times best-seller lists. The Rescue is a story of a single mother in a small town. Most female adults enjoy reading Sparks' novels. In my opinion, Sparks is one of the best authors of this century. This review has information pertaining to background information, basic information about the book, who is the intended audience, and whether or not I thought it was a good book.
Many people wonder who Sparks is and how he gets the ideas for such wonderful books. His family traveled to many different places when he was a child. Sparks received a full track scholarship to the Notre Dame, where he still holds a track and field record. Sparks lives in North Carolina along with his wife and three sons. One of his three sons inspired him to write The Rescue. His son, Ryan, is very similar to one of the characters in this novel. "Ryan did not begin to talk until he was five years old" (Passarella). The Rescue was the 1st novel by Sparks to reach #1 on the New York Times Best-seller list. Sparks has published eleven novels. Three books have been made into movies, Walk to Remember, Notebook, and Message in a Bottle, three others have film rights and one has a screenplay written by Sparks himself. "He and J.K. Rowling are the only contemporary authors to have a novel spend more than a year on both the New York Times hardcover and paperback Best-seller lists" (Passarella).
The Rescue is the story of a single mother, Denise with a child who has a handicap, trying to make it in a small town. The story tells of hardships that every person goes through at some point in their life. The boy, Kyle, gets lost in the woods on a stormy evening after he and his mother were in a car accident trying not to hit a deer in the road. A firefighter, Taylor, assembles a search party to find Kyle. Kyle has a problem with speech, which adds to the stress of the search. The search for Kyle lasted for five and half hours. After Kyle is rescued, Taylor and Denise befriend one another. At one point, Denise comments, "I know Kyle has problems with language, and believe me, I've read all about auditory processing problems" (Sparks, 14). Kyle had been taken to many different doctors to discover what was wrong with him, but not one of the doctors came to the same conclusion. As the story progresses, Kyle starts to open up to Taylor and the relationship between Denise and Taylor progresses as well. Taylor holds back secrets from Denise that places a shield around him, not allowing her to get too close. The main secret that he keeps from her is how his father died, a fire in which his father tried to save him from but became trapped himself after getting Taylor to safety. At one point in the story Taylor states, "Even now, not a day goes by when I don't wish I could turn back the clock and change what happened" (Sparks, 167). Problems arise when Denise starts to believe that Taylor is only with her for her son. By the end of the story, Denise and Taylor are together and are well in love with each other.
Women between the ages of 18 and 35 seem to be the target audience for this book. Women with soft hearts and loving families seem to be attracted to the book since it tells of the hardships that some families have to go through. There have been a few men to admit up to liking the novels be Sparks. Most women who enjoy romantic books will most likely enjoy the works of Nicholas Sparks.
I enjoyed the book very much. I would strongly recommend the book for others to read. It can be related to real life situations which allow people to connect to the fictional characters within the story. Several people that I know have gone through similar situations and it gives hope to those in situations like this. The novel exposes the many secrets that every person knows but keeps it locked deep inside. The novel shows that people can release those secrets and still be the same person they originally were.
The Rescue is a book that every person should read at some point in their life. Sparks reveals many known facts about himself and his life through this book. The book allows people to have faith in what they believe in and lets them believe that there is a person out there for them.
Summary of The RescueWhen confronted by raging fires or deadly accidents, volunteer fireman Taylor McAden feels compelled to take terrifying risks to save lives. But there is one leap of faith Taylor can't bring himself to make: he can't fall in love. For all his adult years, Taylor has sought out women who need to be rescued, women he leaves as soon as their crisis is over and the relationship starts to become truly intimate. When a raging storm hits his small Southern town, single mother Denise Holton's car skids off the road. The young mom is with her four-year-old son, Kyle, a boy with severe learning disabilities and for whom she has sacrificed everything. Taylor McAden finds her unconscious and bleeding, but does not find Kyle. When Denise wakes, the chilling truth becomes clear to both of them: Kyle is gone. During the search for Kyle, the connection between Taylor and Denise takes root. Taylor doesn't know that this rescue will be different from all the others, demanding far more than raw physical courage. It will lead him to the possibility of his own rescue from a life lived without love and will require him to open doors to his past that were slammed shut by pain. This rescue will dare him to live life to the fullest by daring to love. Denise Holden's life is a fragile mix of luck and hard work. A single mom of a speech-delayed son, Denise makes ends meet by moving to the small town of Edenton, North Carolina, and working the late shift as a waitress. When Denise crashes her car and her son Kyle flees the accident and disappears into the storm, her only stroke of luck is the quick arrival of Taylor McAden, a volunteer fireman. Taylor's got a knack for fixing people, and he can't help wanting to be involved with Denise beyond the initial rescue of Kyle. As Taylor helps Denise recover from the accident and get to know the town, they discover a sweet bond and a magical chemistry that pulls them closer and closer. Though Taylor fits perfectly into Denise's family, he's unable to open his heart to being loved by her. As Taylor struggles to understand his conflicting desires, Denise questions the wisdom of gambling with Kyle's and her own emotions. Author Nicholas Sparks has found a loyal audience for his stories about the internal battles that accompany the arrival of love. His heroes may be truck-driving manly men and his heroines emotional swamis, but it's easy to overlook the traditional roles when the complexities of human relationships are so beautifully described. Sparks has found his forte, and this novel is sure to be as popular as his earlier works. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
