Book Review: Gooooooooo Krakens!!!

700 years from now, a boy named Quentin Barnes is born on Mining Colony IV (called Micovi) in the Purist Nation. By the time he was five he was orphaned and working in the mines as slave labor. As he grew, he was unexpectedly discovered by Stedmar Osborne, owner of the Raiders team in the PNFL (Purist Nation Football League). Quentin's talent as quarterback is the stuff legends are made of, so it's no wonder that he was sold to Quyth Leader (honorably addressed as the 'Shamakath') Gredok The Splithead; owner of the Krakens football team who play in the legendary GFL (Galactic Football League). Quentin, having never left his homeworld, firmly believing in the Purist Nation's one God, racist and xenophobic, had finally hit the big time.
Quentin has never played on a team that included alien players; he will have to battle his racist Purist beliefs and not only learn to play with other races, but learn all the different, and stricter, rules of the GFL. A superstar in the PNFL, looking out only for himself, he now must succumb to being third string behind legendary quarterback Donald Pine - a blue skinned human from a humanoid planet originating from Earth long ago. Stunned by the speed, agility, jumping, and power of other races, Quentin must also overcome his isolation and learn to work as a team with aliens he believes to be inferior to himself.
The new season begins! Quentin in now in the big leagues ... but can he survive there?
'The Rookie' is one of the best books I've read in 2009. I don't even like football, and had to stumble through some of the detailed plays, but I loved 'The Rookie'. Incredibly fast-paced, get ready for the ride of your life when you read 'The Rookie'. I couldn't put it down, reading well into the night to finish it.
'The Rookie' is not only a great story, but a uniquely formatted book. Inside are 16 glossy color pages of the Kraken Insider magazine, showing the Krakens and the Woo Wallcrawlers (the first game of the season), lineups for offense and defense, game schedules, rosters, interviews, and most importantly an overview of the different species competing in the league both in and out of uniform: Human, Sklorno, Ki, and Quyth. The artwork on these pages is stunning, and incredibly helpful in picturing the different types of abilities of each species. At the back of the novel is an except of printed material relating to the storyline; including a timeline of football from 1967 to 2682, and a glossary of unique words and phrases used in the book. Please, Mr. Sigler, include these essential extras in Volume Two.
My only issue with the novel is that sometimes Quentin Barnes seems a little one-dimensional; not quite fully fleshed out. But since 'The Rookie' is advertised as Volume One, by Volume Two I can see Quentin rounding himself out. This, mind you, is a minor issue in comparison to the brilliance of the rest of the novel. There's sports, mystery, fantastic aliens, unusual companionships, conflict, corrupt bureaucracy, religious fervor, racism, some tendrils of horror, and most of all intense enjoyment and cerebral stimulation.
You don't have to be a sports lover to thoroughly enjoy 'The Rookie', but if you are a rabid football fan you'll love it even more. Each page is filled with excitement; you can hear the crowds and smell the different grasses of the different planets the Krakens play on. Sigler's imagination must be on overload to have come up with such a realistic, unique, and compelling Sci-Fi/Fantasy experience. I can't wait for the next installment. I hope Sigler is a fast writer! Ten stars to this brilliant novel. Enjoy! And Gooooo Krakens!!
