Book Review: While it has its moments, the Queen Betsy series is better

MaryJanice Davidson is very good at creating quirky characters with strong personalities, and writing truly funny romance novels. This book is not one of those; all the characters are basically the same person with the same personality and while it was refreshing to read a story where the two lovers like each other from the start, that couldn't make up for the sloppy characterizations and re-run jokes.
Christina Krabbe ("the 'e' is silent!") was working as a chef on a cruise liner, which was in port in Alaska (which is now a kingdom, after splitting off from Russia; while Alaska was offered for sale to the United States, they declined since they were kind of busy with the Civil War) when her boss groped her one too many times. After kneeing him in the groin he fires her - but not before she quits - and she is left in Alaska with whatever she had packed in her bags and $50. She spends the $50 to take a fishing tour which, strangely, is being captained by the King of Alaska. Chris is the only passenger that doesn't realize who he is, and her refreshing rudeness charms the king, who offers to let her stay with him and his family in the palace. When she arrives, the king tells his oldest son - David - that he (David) will be marrying this American girl and therefore make her Crown Princess. While Chris is less than charmed with David's favorite hobby (a large flock of penguins), and while David is taken aback by her brusque American-ness, they nonetheless rather like each other and things are going great.
Until an abduction of the king's youngest son, Nicolas, goes awry, leaving the king in a coma, and the young couple - who were just getting ready to leave for their honeymoon - in charge of Alaska.
As I mentioned, the book has its moments, but overall I was less than impressed with the book overall. Take it or leave it, it's up to you how you feel, but I wouldn't recommend spending money on this book if you can check it out of the library or something.
