Book Review: part of the problem, not the solution

Does it seem considerably easier to make Eagle Scouts today than it did 30 years ago? Wonder how some troops can turn out an Eagle at 13 or 14 years old? Well, the attitude toward scoutmastering expressed in this book is largely responsible. I get the sense that the author had a bad experience with some hard-nosed scoutmaster in his youth and wrote this diatribe out of anger. Certainly there is no need to run a boot camp, but the effort to take all things 'military' out of scouting has managed to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Even standing in patrol lines is often construed as 'too military' for scouting. Boy-led troops founder because none of their 'leaders' has any notion of how to lead and today's Scoutmasters are SO hands-off they provide little or no guidance. Those that do provide such are at risk of being bashed about by the wielders of this book and others like it.
Perhaps the original intent here was well meaning, but like so much else in America, in order to make a point it advocates an extremism that is just as detrimental to scouting as the methods it purports to abhor. If you are the type of person that thinks people are born with self esteem and that losing a few Little League baseball games will destroy it, then this book is for you (even if you aren't the type needed in scouting). Scoutmasters need help and today's scouting program needs help, but you won't find much of either in this book.
