Book Reviews of The Secret Between UsBook Review: Great Book! Summary: 5 Stars
I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book through the BZZAgent program which allows you to try new products and let other people know what you think. That being said, they want you to be honest so if I didn't like this book I'd say so. The opposite is true. I really enjoyed this book. The relationship between the mother and the daughter was really interesting and as the story progresses it gets more complicated. I didn't want this book to end. It is very well written and you come to care about the characters. I have read other Barbara Delinsky novels in the past and have always enjoyed them. I highly recommend this novel!
Book Review: Not Bad, but Not Great Summary: 3 Stars
THE SECRET BETWEEN US deals with the interactions of family. How far a mother will go to protect her child, how a child reacts to knowing they've done something that can never be taken back. It's not a bad story, but it wasn't as fully evolved as I would have liked it to be.
The main problem, for me, was the ending, which I saw as a total cop-out. In the end, the resolutions came too easily, and in ways that made everyone turn out to be a good guy. Life rarely works this way in real life.
This isn't Barbara Delinsky's best story, but it's still good for reading about a family who will do anything to keep itself whole.
Book Review: A Solid Read... Summary: 4 Stars
I found this to be a very interesting story of the complexity of family relationships. It deftly illustrates how no decision we make is without repercussions for our family members.
Deborah chooses to shoulder the responsibility for Grace's actions and inadvertently touches off a chain reaction of events that leads to family confessions about pressure, expectations and what it means to be accepted and loved in a family.
It also explores the pros and cons of living in a small town where everyone knows you and your business.
Overall, I think this is a very solid read and I will look for more books by Barbara Delinsky.
Book Review: It's No Secret Summary: 2 Stars
Intrigued by mother-daughter plots, I picked up this book wanting to try an author I had never read. Based on this piece, I don't think I will be giving Delinsky another try. The Secret Between Us fell flat plot-wise; its redemption: a sliver of realistic characterization. Young Grace was made of that malleable plastic, as opposed to the composite stuff that breaks when you try to delve into its properties, such as her victim, her parents and her aunt. Perhaps there is a sect that enjoys anti-climatic reads, and that is to be respected. However, it's no secret that Delinsky should have kept this one to herself.
Book Review: Too much whining Summary: 3 Stars
This book started off great. Couldn't put it down and then a bit more than half-way through I flipped ahead to see how it ended. It seemed that the whole book was just the same thing over and over. Grace being upset about what happened and her having the same conversation over and over with her mother about how miserable she was. And Deborah the same thing. Having the arguments with her Dad constantly (he was such a jerk!) and thinking about her ended marriage and concern over her daughter. It just could've been more condensed and quick.
