Book Reviews of The Secret Between Us

Book Review: Read it all before
Summary: 2 Stars

This story has been told in different forms, and this book delivers the story no better than others. It seemed repetitive in parts, and I didn't really sympathize with the characters - it got to such a point, I wanted the story to end quickly. And when I did reach the final chapters, found the ending unsatisfactory and tied up all "too neatly".....A bit like Jodi Piccoult novels - pages and pages of story, and then rushes the ending and you are left wondering how the author could finish up the story so unsatisfactorily.

Book Review: Easy to read
Summary: 3 Stars

I have read many of Delinsky's books and loved them. This story was easy to read, but I never felt the empathy for the characters that I should have felt. The story of Poppy the Grandfather never fully developed and also the story with the ex-husband never felt real? It all ended to tidy as many reviewers have pointed out. Barbara is too good a writer to rush the ending like she did. If you want a quick read that is average this is a great book for you, otherwise stay away.

Book Review: Good Read!
Summary: 4 Stars

I got an advanced copy of this through the Bzz Agent program and ithought that I wouldn't like it. I figured it would be another Jodi Picoult rip off and initially I had a hard time getting into it. I don't usually care for this type of fiction, but to be honest once I got into it, I really liked it. I came to care about the characters, get mad at the characters, and be happy for them. True there are some really cliched plotlines and twists, but it was an entertaining read.

Book Review: As Grimace-Producing as a Can of SPAM
Summary: 1 Stars

Ten minutes into this book (audio version), I had to delete it from my MP3 player. I wanted to delete it after 3 minutes, but I forced myself to try to give it a fair chance. However, the next 7 minutes showed no promise of improvement. The author doesn't "show", she only "tells". The writing was like eating Spam when you want t-bone steak. It's quick and easy--but also completely unsatisfying and blah. I still feel disgusted just thinking about it. It was that bad.

Book Review: Humdrum ho hum
Summary: 3 Stars

I listened to this book on CD and there were times when I wanted to give up on it entirely. The leading character was a doormat for everyone and her Father, Michael, was the absolute worst. I found this book very frustrating and at times I just wanted to scream. But I kept thinking this is Barbara Delinsky surely it's going to get better. Wrong! You may read it and love it but based on some of the other reviews I don't think I'm alone with my disappointment.
