Book Reviews of The Secret Lover (Rogues of Regent Street, Book 4)Book Review: Don't read the epilogue! Summary: 4 Stars
I couldn't stop reading this book. The heroes had great chemistry from the moment they met. And for a change they actually knew each other for a few days before they even kissed. And that made their first kiss all the more special. I could feel their attachment for each other grow, and I loved it. Caleb was great, a self-made man who struggled to show the world he was worthy - worthy of respect, worthy of love. Sophie was growing throughout the book, becoming more confident, getting to know herself, ready to fight for what she wanted and not let her family make decisions for her. The side characters, especially Honorine, were wonderful and enriched the story. But there were quite a few things that really bothered me.
*spoiler warning*
All the time, even when Caleb was her lover, Sophie received Trevor and put up with his behavior, even with his kisses. Why, if she had no intention of marrying him? Couldn't she just tell him that? Especially after he proposed to her. Couldn't she turn him down at once???
Sophie was craving a mans touch. That is all fine, but how did she even know what she wanted? She didn't have any experience with men except for her unfortunate marriage. And I don't think their marriage bed was especially exciting - according to the fact her husband raped and beat her.
And towards the end, the hero became a bit too soft. All right, he was in love, but he didn't have to behave like a total softy.
From the point where they reached the Hamilton house the book took a turning to the worse. I could just stop reading there. Maybe the writer had to finish the book quickly? But some (well, almost all) of the things bothered me so very much! For instance, they left his father in the hands of a crazy man, but they didn't move a finger for a whole week! Well, except for having parties and a wedding. How could Caleb, if he really cared so much for his father, just sit idly and do nothing for a whole week??? And then her brother arrived for the wedding and just hugged her and told her he was happy for her. Oh really? It was totally out of character for him.
But what absolutely spoiled the book for me was the epilogue. So if you don't want to know what is there, stop reading now ;).
I simply couldn't believe that the writer killed almost all the leading characters. OK, I know that eventually we all die, but I really don't want to read about it in a romance novel. And in the end the heroine dies, and the hero is sitting next to her, wishing he would die too. WHAT??? At that point, I just wished I never finished this book.
But that was not the only thing that bothered me about the ending. Why couldn't they stay in England? With the support of her brother and his father, they should be fine. Especially according to the fact that neither of them liked the ton and neither wanted be a part of it. So what was the problem? They could just live anonymously in England, close to their families, instead of moving through Europe all the time. And they really didn't have to sell the house at the pond.
The time when Caleb met his brother in a gaming hell, with a hooker on his knees, well, that was totally unnecessary. All right, he was the bad guy, we understand this. Can't you just leave him alone? And William too. I don't really car why and how he died.
So, there were many things that bothered me in the last part of the book, but apart from that, it was a wonderful read and I really enjoyed it. And I'm still looking forward to reading some more Julia Londons books, although I will probably skip their epilogues;)
