Book Review: Military "Seinfeld" - Entertaining Books Where Nothing Really Happens . . .
Summary: 2 Stars
. . . I've read just about everything WEBG has churned out over the last 30 years. For me, it's tribute to the guy's talent that he's able to construct entertaining and compelling stories about the military . . . where no true "military" action happens whatsoever. I mean, even during WWWII and Korea, the bad guys don't get zapped in real time until the final pages. In WEBG's world, it's all about the planning, the relationships, the internecine battles within the military, the womanizing and the consumption of enormous amounts of Famous Grouse scotch and enormous steaks. Repeat: lots of scotch, lots of steaks. And for 30 years ol' WEBG has been churning this formula out, and people like me stay up late reading them. Because for all of their faults, they are entertaining as hell.
"The Shooters" is no exception and stays true to WEBG's formula.
But it's starting to wear on me. Like the rest of his books, the main characters are likeable, altruistic and patriotic to the core. The good guys get the girls, the haughty and arrogant officers get taken down and justice prevails. And there's enough alcohol and beef consumption to send a dietician screaming into the night.
But while all of WEBG's books require certain degrees of belief suspension (hey, they're novels - nobody reads James Bond stories for realism) this book really started to annoy me. The backstory where Castillo beds the soon-to-be married general's daughter after getting back from the Gulf War is not just unbelievable, it's accompanied by some of the worst dialogue ever written. And it happens not once, but twice. It's excruciating. And busting international terrorists and drug kingpins while accompanied by old men and oversized french cattle dogs . . . come on. I know its fiction, but this just isn't worthy of the justly popular "Men at War" and "Corps" series.
And this goes on for 500 pages, with only the last few containing any "action".
WEB Griffin, I love ya. You've kept me entertained (and up way too late) for 20 years. That's a damn good streak.
But if you can't write 'em like you mean 'em, it's time to hang up the battle saber, hoss.

A key DEA agent has been kidnapped by drugrunners. As much as the news angers Presidential Agent Castillo, he thinks there?s no way he could get permission to rescue the man. But Castillo?s wrong?the President himself orders Castillo to do anything it takes to bring back the agent...anything except get caught.
