Book Review: A great find!

I love historical fiction and every time I searched Amazon, The Shopkeeper was listed as a top choice. I dismissed the choice several times as I preferred to read about topics from the medieval time period; however, I recently was out of handy options so I decided to take a chance and I picked up The Shopkeeper.
I am very glad I did. It is a quick read with a great story. The action is fast-paced and well written. I fell in love with the main character, Steve Dancy and immediately had to find Leadville.
Pickup the book - even if you aren't a fan of the Western genre. The story is worth it.
Book Review: The Old West - Come Alive

What a fun read this book was. The Steve Dancy character is likeable and down-to-earth, but has some surprising talents that are uncovered as the story unfolds. I liked the link between the rough and ready spirit of the West and the complexity of the accompanying politics. The details of day-to-day living in a mining town, on the trail, at a cattle ranch, and in the political arena made this story really come alive. The other characters were well developed and you just have to love the elder Mrs. Bolton. I look forward to reading `Leadville' to find out what Steve Dancy learns about the West in next chapter of his adventuresBook Review: Seems like real people

The characters in THE STOREKEEPER came across to me as if they were real people from out of my own past! I myself am an old ranch-hand and when one reads a story written like this it is almost impossible to keep your feet on the ground and accept it as something fictious - without any hesitation I give it a five and believe it deserves every star. The way James lays out his story it is as if he is spiritually in touch with another time - he tells it as if he is giving us a private peep into one of his past lives - but of course that is the sign of a great story-teller... I chose this book because of the reviews as a gift for an avid Western reader who doesn't troll online or frequent bookstores because of an illness. He received this wonderful gift last Wednesday and finished it on his second day LOVING IT and wanting another "Steve Dancy" book NOW. He'll have to wait for Christmas it appears but thank you James D. Best for a fabulous new character and wonderfully written book from someone who loves his (quality) Westerns. You have brightened someone's days who needed some brightening! His daughter is jealous that SHE didn't give it to him. So, well done Mr. Best... Western literature typically presents the reader with a choice of one of two kinds of hero - someone like Achilles, the blunt, brave warrior incapable of guile or Odysseus in the Odyssey - someone who is crafty and clever. The protagonist in The Shopkeeper blends the best of both.
