Book Reviews of The Shopkeeper

Book Review: The Shopkeeper
Summary: 5 Stars

I just finished reading "The Shopkeeper", and I keep thinking to myself - Wow - that was a really good book. One of the best things about the story is that is not predictable (I'm really tired of many authors "formula" stories where you have it figured out after a couple chapters) And, the author has a descriptive way with words that makes you feel like you're right there witnessing the story. I found myself staying up at night to read "just one more chapter" before I had to force myself to put it down. I'm really looking forward to the next Steve Dancy tale.

Book Review: Great story and characters.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is an excellent work of fiction that occurs in the old west, however it's far from being a western. This book conjurs up images as you read it. I can see Sam Elliott as the Pinkerton Captain and Robert Duvall as the hired sharpshooter, and maybe an unknown as the main character who is from NYC but he's different than a typical city resident and enjoys the outdoors. He's doing more than the typical journey to seek adventure in the west. It's a very enjoyable read. Generally I prefer historical fiction but I'll be looking for this authors next book.

Book Review: The Shopkeeper
Summary: 5 Stars

As someone who loves history in general, and the old west in particular, I found that this book accurately portrays the time period. It immediately captures the reader and is one of those books that are difficult to put down.
You also find yourself almost living in the period, as if the characters are alive. You identify yourself with them and understand the hardships of living in Nevada during those times.
I am eagerly awaiting a sequel, or at least another book by this author. James Best is truly a talented writer that has done his homework.

Book Review: Captivating Western Dialogue
Summary: 5 Stars

I've reviewed the first and second manuscript drafts and it's a pleasure to finally read the finished book. It's well crafted in every respect. Pick it up and read any page and before you know it you're caught-up as though eavesdropping to the conversation of characters real as day; learning their life-stories unraveling behind and before them while weaving a story line filled with surprised twists of turns and suspense. The women characters are few but are my favorite, some are the cagiest and most authentic I've read in a western.

Book Review: This book captures you
Summary: 5 Stars

I always had a soft spot for Westerns when it comes to movies, but had a hard time really getting into Westerns when it comes to books. But the
Shopkeeper really kept me interested all the way through...
