Book Review: Steeped in Name Dropping

There's been a lot of talk recently about "product placement" in TV and the movies, but "The Silver Needle Murder" is the first time the issue's come up for me in a mystery novel. As others have noted, there are Dolce & Gabbana sandals. There are also Laurent Perrier champagne (excellent, btw), Ralph Lauren knock-offs, Baccarat crystal flutes, Lenox dishes. Enough already! Childs supposedly was in marketing before turning to mysteries...one wonders if she struck a deal with some of her former clients. And that's about all one wonders about in this bit of leaden fluff. Hint: The bird that appears in Theo's nightmares is a BIG CLUE!
What's ultimately the most disappointing about this outing, though, is that it rings with inauthenticity. Every oyster has a name, every wine a barrel and a vintage, every accessory a designer, and it all seems...false, as if varietal or brand names were substitutes for authentic detail of place and character. Perhaps it is a comment on the society in which we live. Or perhaps Charleston society really is that shallow. We won't find out here any more than we will visiting an upscale mall.
