Book Reviews of The Skin Type Solution

Book Review: Stop the skin-care product guessing game once and for all!
Summary: 5 Stars

After many years of searching for products that were right for my sensitive skin, with little to no success, I bought this book hoping to have a bit of help while staring at aisles of drugstore products. It has been a tremendous help to me and I highly recommend it for the following reasons:
1. Dr. Baumann suggests products for each skin type at various price points....it truly will STOP the guessing game at the drugstore of "will this lotion be too greasy for my already oily skin?" and "what if this soap irritates my super sensitive skin?" Dr. Baumann clearly suggests what products are appropriate, taking out ALL the guesswork. And regardless of your budget- she gives helpful suggestions.
2. The book provides a comprehensive skin-type quiz allowing you to understand your skin and why it acts how it does. Dr. Baumann goes well beyond the traditional oily/dry/sensitive/combination skin types and really dives into details about various types of skin (pigmented versus non-pigmented skin, super-sensitive versus normal, wrinkled versus tight, etc.) You will have a good sense of your skin type AND how to care for it after reading this book.
3. The products she recommends really DO work for your skin type. As a woman in my 20s with incredibly sensitive skin, I have noticed huge changes in the years since I read this book and applied what I learned from Dr. Baumann (and yes, you read that right...I have been using the products she recommended for years with continued success and huge long-term changes in my skin...much less red, much less irritated). And on a side-note, she also recommends prescription products that are best for each skin type, which can definitely help launch a productive conversation with your dermatologist about your skin needs.
4. And lastly- I highly recommend this book because Dr. Baumann provides information on skin-care for people with varying degrees of problematic skin. If you simply need assistance finding products that will work for you- this book will help a great deal. AND if you've struggled for years with various skin problems, dermatologist visits, etc. this book will STILL help you a great deal. It really is applicable to a range of individuals with varying skin problems.
Highly recommend this book- so glad I bought it and feel strongly enough about it to post my first amazon.com book review!

Book Review: great education on your skin
Summary: 5 Stars

i have read several books on skin care and this is one of the best. the book is written by a successful dermatologist who has a practice, is a professor and does lots of research for many of the major companies. she does not sell or promote any one product over another so in my mind that improves her credibility.

as others have mentioned there is a test to help you determine your skin type, is it perfect - no, is it very good at helping you get figure it out - YES! i already knew my skin type but it was good to see the level of each of the factors i was. after completing the test you can read a plethora of information about your skin, the cleansers to use, whether or not to use toner or moisturizer, special treatments, ingredients to avoid and ingredients/products that are beneficial to your skin.

i think the book is excellent for the education alone. even if you go see a dermatologist you will feel smarter and be able to ask better questions and make better decisions about your treatment. the recommendations in this edition of the book are for products you can buy in the drugstore or department stores. there is only brief mention of prescription products or medicines. i like that because i feel more empowered to treat my skin that way instead of having to depend on a doctor or paying for expensive prescriptions.

not to sound like an infomercial but dr. baumann's suggestions are working for me so far. i've done other programs (such as the acne cure) but they neglected one or more aspects of my skin, such as pigmentation problems. this really covers everything you need for clear, healthy, younger looking skin. it seems like a lot of money and effort is put into skin care these days and that's because how your skin looks has a big impact on how you feel about yourself and your appearance. if you're having skin problems or you just can't seem to find the right products for your skin, do yourself a big favor and buy this book. it's totally worth it!

Book Review: Somewhat useful, but...
Summary: 3 Stars

The pros:
-The book helps you type your skin more thoroughly than any other skin-type tests I've seen. This alone might make you more aware of your skin issues and better equipped to take care of them, regardless of whether or not you follow the author's advice on products to use.
-The above information helps make sense of the conflicting advice you often see in the mainstream media (i.e. "exfoliate regularly" vs. "treat your skin as gently as possible").
-Many products are reviewed, and options in varying price ranges are provided.

The cons:
-Not much advice for people who fall right in the middle in the different skin type categories.
-Certain very popular products, such as Clinique's classic yellow moisturizer and Estee Lauder's "little brown bottle" are mentioned nowhere. Even if they don't fit into her recemmended regimens, the author should provide some input on certain best-selling products that many women swear by.
-The self-congratulatory tone in the introductory parts of the book is annoying. It does sound a bit like a promotional work, which makes me suspect that the complaint that she's basically a product endorser for certain companies might be valid.
-Finally, my biggest complaint: she recommends fade creams that contain CHEMICALS SUCH AS HYDROQUINONE THAT HAVE BEEN LINKED TO HEALTH PROBLEMS and increased skin pigmentation! The UK has already banned hydroquinone, and last year the FDA proposed a ban on it. I didn't find this out until after I'd purchased a fade cream that the author recommended. I used it for about two months (no perceptible difference), and was planning to give it another month to work before I decided whether or not to continue, but after reading up on hydroquinone, I'm ditching it.

Book Review: One of the best GIFTS you can give yourself/your women friends!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm 58 and have, like most other women my age, spent oodles of dollars over decades on various skincare products with no understanding as to whether they were good or bad for my skin.

After reading this book, I will never spend another penny on a product or procedure that won't benefit my particular skin type.

Dr. B. has taken the confusion out of what products I should buy and apply, what procedures I need and what protections and precautions I should take to have the best skin ever.

My skin is dry, non-pigmented, reactive and wrinkled.
I now know exactly what skincare regime I should be following to protect my skin from further wrinkles and to eliminate some of the wrinkles that I have.

I also now have an idea about how to start up with applying Retin-A or retinoyl products to avoid irritation.

Dr. B doesn't push plastic surgery (and I am thankful for that) but she gives insight into how Botox and fillers can be used effectively to eliminate deep lines and wrinkles.

One of the best two tips she gives is that Thermage can be used to help with puffiness under the eyes and sagging skin AND that facials (which I used to have about once a month) do not benefit the skin in the long run.

She doesn't "push" any particular products. She gives low price, medium price and high price choices for varous skincare products.
And she gives you a choice of a non-prescription AND a prescription skin care regime for each particular type of skin.

This is a terrific book!

Book Review: I think she has changed my life
Summary: 5 Stars

I've never reviewed a book until now. However, I feel so strongly about this one that I can't wait to share it with family, friends, and complete strangers. I've had skin problems for the past 20+ years and have never found anyone (doctor, dermatoligist, spa facialist, friend, family) who has been able to explain to me what is going on with my face or ever give me the plan to help. I am what she decribes as a DSPW (Dry, Sensitive, Pigmented, Wrinkle prone), or as she nicknamed the "desperate skin type". Dr. Baumann brought me to tears when I read the chapter that explained what is wrong with my skin, and a plan to remedy the problems I face (no pun intended). She not only could explain the problem to me, but listed specific products I can safely use. With my dry skin, I was told often to exfoliate, but my skin is so sensitive that it would get very irritated. Products I would try would help a little for awhile, but would eventually make the problem worse once I started to react to them. I've wasted years of money trying products and either leaving them sit in the medicine cabinet or throwing them away. I eventually started to give up. Dr. Baumann has given me new hope. If you are like me and are plagued with even minor skin problems, you have to get this book. It has an easy questionaire that will pinpoint your skin type, and can help with any of your skin ailments. This book has saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars in products I don't need or shouldn't use. I only wish I had found it 20 years ago.
