Book Reviews of The Songs of InsectsBook Review: This book far exceeded my expectations Summary: 5 Stars
"The Songs of Insects" has opened up a world of insect sound to me. Six-legged singers are often hard to spot visually and therefore difficult to identify. This book provides a solution. A large number of species of insect singers are covered and for each there is a beautiful photograph, a range map and description as well as a good sound track and sonogram. Both noctural and diurnal species are included. I highly recommend this book
Book Review: ***** DON'T FORGET THE SUPERB WEBSITE EITHER ***** Summary: 5 Stars
Superb photographs, text, and audio in this book/CD package.
I first found out about this book when I was utilizing the authors' superb website MUSICOFNATURE_DOT_COM.
That website can be used as an excellent complimentary resource to this book.
I have enjoyed this great reference so much that I asked for - and received; hooray! - THE SONGS OF WILD BIRDS by Mr. Elliot.
Book Review: Labor of love. Summary: 5 Stars
A splendid book. A labor of love long in the making. Even if you don't hear the songs, the photos are unique. These splendid animals walk right out of the page into your life. I suggest you try this book with preschoolers. It's possible, given the great beauty, especially of the katydids, that this would be a way of overcoming some of our resistance to fully embracing insects as kin and friends.
Book Review: Another extraordinary book from Lang Elliott Summary: 5 Stars
Each new book Lang Elliott produces is a leap and a bound more wonderful than the last excellent one. A prolific sound-recordist and photographer, Elliott--along with co-author Wil Hershberger--knows how to communicate knowledge and information in a way that draws the reader in, opening eyes, ears and sense of wonder to the natural world. What a fabulous addition to my natural history library!
Book Review: Songs of Insects Summary: 5 Stars
I have always wondered what was making the noise one hears in the late summer and fall in the woods of the midwest. I purchased "Songs of Insects" to see if I could identify what was making those sounds. The book was better than I expected, each insect is photographed beautifully and the CD with the book has each insect clearly introduced with the recorded call of each insect that follows.
