Book Review: This book deserves every star!

As I read over the reviews, I cannot believe anyone did not appreciate the beauty of the prose or the profound realisms in the story. This is a woman's story, but is equal to The Kite Runner or A Fine Balance (both huge bestsellers), in evoking a sense of place, time, and story. The characters have lives that some of us may not relate to, but everyone should read about. The story jumps from Sera to Bhima and back and forth in time, but never loses the beauty and the heart-wrenching sadness that is life in Mumbai. I thought the ending was magnificent. Just as in Kite Runner or Fine Balance, life is not a perfect ending, but a series of experiences, some of which result in an understanding of life beyond ourselves.Book Review: Absolutely beautiful

A beautiful book about two families of women in India. One is a servant, living in the slums, whose orphan granddaughter becomes pregnant. The other is the family she works for - led by Sera, whose daughter is married and pregnant. We discover much about the women's pasts and how they ended up where they are and what has shaped them in their lives.
It's a really wonderful story - it's unceasingly interesting and full of twists (the big twist I had not expected at all). You really begin to feel compassion for both the lead female characters. One has suffered through an abusive marriage and the other has lost husband, children, and her life to servitude. Beautifully written and completely enthralling.

I agree with everyone this novel is very well written. What a testimonial on the caste system, education, poverty, womanhood, motherhood, love and hate. If it is missing anything, I would have liked the guilty to be punished, but retribution might have also ruined the renewed spirit of Bhima, so I guess I understand its absence. You know a novel has gotten to you when you continue to ponder what happenes after the last word is read. Will she find another job, does Sera eventually believe her, will her grand-daughter return to school and escape the surrounding poverty, or wll she herself, learn to read, will her son ever return to her life? So many unanswered possibilities, enough for a followup novel.Book Review: Beautiful writing

This book is beautifully written because the author can describe emotions in such great detail that it takes your breath away. This book is about the relationship of a housewife(sera) and maidservant(bhima)and the complicated relationship they have. How their lives are similar yet different. There are things that bhima is aware of that happen in sera's life that no one knows of. Sera is very generous towards bhima but still keeps a distance since her society/culture frowns upon keeping an equal relationship with someone of bhima's background/status. The ending of this book left me with plenty of unanswered questions. The style of writing is incredible and has prompted me to read her other books.Book Review: what a rich experience

I just finished reading "A space between us". I could not put the book down. It had all the ingredients of a great book, a compelling story, rich descriptive language and a universal theme. It touched me on so many levels. I have a Bhima in me as well as a Sera. I identified with the pain and shame as well as with the grace and beauty. the descriptive language is so amazing that it triggered all my senses. I could smell the slums as well as the spices of the food, the market and Sera's home. It's been a while since I felt so engaged in a book and so curious about the character development. you are in for a real treat.
I cannot wait to read Thrity Umrigar next novel.
